Q: How do you see the relationship between Peter and Olivia?
Joshua: The dynamic is this three person dynamic rather than a two person dynamic. If you want to talk about our lead-in Bones, which is a very good, contemporary example, there's a larger ensemble, but it is the dynamic between those two characters (Brennan and Booth) that drives that show. It's the will they or won't they, and the spark that they have, that makes everything else tick. But, that's not us.
We have a family dynamic, where you have this bizarre, broken, incredibly accomplished, psychopathic father, and a prodigal son, and what is becoming a sister or daughter of this family dynamic. The will they or won't they, to me, is much less interesting. I'm not talking about actual blood family, obviously, but the dynamic is that they've become protective of each other, in a way that, if you just took those three characters separately, you would say there's no way that they're going to end up in each other's lives. It's the tension of that, that I think is what's going to drive the show forward, and not the, "I wonder if these two are ever going to end up naked together?"
There is this straight-laced, hard-ass, just-the-facts-ma'am cop who is forced into collusion with this very off-the-cuff, mercenary for hire that is this, at best, grey operative, but probably much more dark than that, who is her only avenue to a fruitcake. The guy is out of his mind. He's the anti-thesis of her thought process. Walter goes at everything through squiggly lines, and Olivia is everything straight ahead. So, the fact that these people were put together, there's a natural tension because none of them agree on the methods of how to do anything, and yet, over the course of this unfolding of events, which we call the Pattern, they have become a family unit. They protect each other. They look out for each other. They go really, really far out on the line for each other. And, an offense against one is an offense against all. Maybe it's a Three Musketeers thing.
