Winter
Little Alice Winchester stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame. Her eyes were blank with fever, and they were filling with tears as she watched her sister go out the door to enjoy the winter weather. It was so unfair, Alice wanted to play in the snow too. But she knew she was not allowed outside in the cold when she was sick.
It had been snowing all day, and now it was evening. The world had gone dark, but the full moon shone a pale light on the white carpet covering the Winchester family`s garden.
Alice had a bad cold and a fever, but Emily had been allowed to play a little while before bedtime. It was hard for Sam`s youngest to watch her sister play in the snow, when she wasn`t allowed to participate. With a sniffle, Alice beat her fist against the door frame and slammed the door shut.
“It`s not fair!” Furious with the injustice of her being sick on a snow day, Alice ran inside the kitchen, out in the hallway and into her bedroom, closing that door also with a loud slam.
Sam, who had been sitting in the living room on his laptop, sighed. With a glance at the clock on the wall, he decided to give Alice an early bedtime. Hopefully she would feel better once she got some rest.
He opened the door to Alice`s bedroom, catching the girl`s eye as she lay sprawled on the bed, pouting.
“Brush your teeth and get ready for bed, OK? You`ll feel better in the morning.”
Alice gave him a weak smile at the faint promise of play in the snow. “Can I play outside with Emily tomorrow?” she asked.
Sam smiled. “You may play outside with Emily once your fever is gone. Now get your PJs on and I`ll come in and say goodnight in a little while.”
Alice looked a little crestfallen, but moved off the bed to do as she was told.
A while later, when Sam came back to tuck her in, he realized Alice`s bed was empty. Puzzled, he stepped inside, letting his green gaze pan the bedroom. A thought suddenly struck him, and fearing the worst, Sam ran to the front door and ripped it open. To his great relief, the only girl playing outside was his eight-year-old.
“Ten more minutes, Emily,” he told her firmly.
He closed the front door and returned to the bedroom of his youngest. This time he heard a giggle from underneath the bed, and when he stepped close to it, Alice`s arm shot out and grabbed his leg. Sam yelled in mock surprise, earning a very happy and satisfied laughter from his little girl. Sam knelt down on the floor and peeked under the bed.
“Bedtime.”
When Alice was lying in bed, and Sam had tucked the duvet firmly around her, he felt her forehead. She was very hot and her nose was quite stuffy. Sam brushed the girl`s blonde hair away from her face and asked: “Do you want me to read you a story?”
Alice shook her head.
“OK, then.” Sam said. “Lie down and close your eyes.”
Alice did so, and Sam kissed her cheek, wishing her a good night. But as he got up from the bed, Alice`s thin voice piped up from the pillow: “Daddy?”
Sam turned to face his daughter. “What is it, sweetheart?”
“Sing for me?”
Sam smiled as he sat back down on the bed and began to sing a lullaby.
Four days later the snow was still lying thick across the land, but the fever no longer had a grip on Alice.
Sam was more than happy to allow her outside to play with Emily, especially since she had been nagging him constantly the last four days about being allowed out to play in the snow. Alice may be rid of the fever, but Sam was afraid she might get sick again if she got too cold, so she would only be allowed outside a little while.
The two sisters had a great time playing in the snow. There was a slight incline behind the house, where the girls could slide on their toboggans. Alice screamed with delight as she slid down, feeling the cold air on her face. She was so happy to finally be outside and to be rid of the nasty fever.
They had been outside for a while when Emily suggested they have a snowball fight. Alice quickly agreed to the suggestion, and the girls ran around in the garden, yelling and laughing with joy as they pelted each other with snowballs.
Sam came out of the house to tell the girls to come inside. Just then Alice rolled a large snowball which she aimed at her sister`s head. But she tossed it too high, and the snowball flew clear above Emily and straight into Sam`s face. Alice stood, frozen in shock, mouth open and eyes wide as she stared at her father, whose face was now covered in snow. Sam started moving towards her, his long legs helping him quickly close the distance between them.
Emily, ever helpful to her sister, called out: “Run, Alice!”
And Alice ran, but the deep snow made it difficult to get very far. She only managed to move a couple of meters before Sam caught up to her, and placing his large hands around her waist, he lifted her into the air and turned her upside down. Alice, who was panting with the effort of moving through the snow, and who still had a slightly stuffy nose, gave a scream of surprise and fright. Sam swatted her rear a few times, but the response from his daughter was sounds of joy rather than pain, for Sam was being playful, not angry, and so he had not swatted hard enough to hurt.
Emily ran over to her father, laughing as she threw her arms around his leg. Sam turned Alice right way up again, holding her on his hip as she wiped the snow off his face, still giggling. Sam kissed her on the cheek, and dropped one arm to wrap around Emily.
“I love you, my naughty girls,” Sam chuckled.
