Haunted House
Little Alice Winchester had no interest in joining her older sister and their two cousins as they headed out the door, leaving with strict instruction from Dean not to stay out long or wander too far. She was much too tired. It had been a long and fun Halloween, but now the six-year-old was sleepy, worn out after a long day of trick-and-treating and other fun things.
She sat on the lap of her father, Sam Winchester. Her head was leaning against his chest, and Alice struggled to keep her eyes open as she listened to his steady heartbeat.
She shifted slightly when she felt her father plant a quick kiss on the top of her head. A happy smile blossomed on Alice`s face, and she absentmindedly fingered the edge of her skirt. She was still wearing her costume: A beautiful green dress with a red bow around the waist. On her feet she had white knee stockings and black shoes.
She was wearing a similar outfit to the one Alice had, in Lewis Carroll`s “Alice In Wonderland.” It was her Uncle Dean`s girlfriend Lisa who had suggested it, only half joking, knowing how much the girl adored that story. But little Alice Winchester had thought it was a brilliant idea. She had enjoyed herself immensely walking around the neighborhood, wearing her costume, trick-or-treating together with Emily, Will and Dawn.
Alice had a sweet tooth like no other, and she loved dressing up. So for her, Halloween was one of the best days of the year. She smiled happily as she snuggled close to her father, her breath growing steady, and her eyes sliding shut. As if their voices were coming from far away, Alice could only pick up bits and pieces of the adults conversation before she entered the land of dreams.
Dean nodded towards the sleeping girl on Sam`s lap.
“Looks like Alice is having an early bedtime tonight.”
Sam smiled and put his arm around his daughter.
“She`s exhausted, it`s been a long day. She loves her costume, by the way. It was a very creative suggestion, Lisa.” Sam flashed the brunette a grateful smile. “Thanks again for helping the girls get dressed up. They really love it when you fix their hair and let them wear make-up.”
Lisa grinned.
“It was nothing, I enjoyed every minute.”
“I really am grateful,” Sam said. “Special occasions like parties and holidays are always difficult for me. I can`t deal with small things like helping the girls pick out dresses and do their hair.” Sam cleared his throat and caressed the cheek of the sleeping Alice. “The girls adore you, Lisa. It`s so important for them to have a female presence in their lives. Since they don`t have…” He didn`t finish the sentence, but started a new one instead. “It`s killing me that my daughters are going through the same thing I did. Growing up without a mother.”
“It`s different for your girls, though,” Lisa said slowly. “You were just a baby when Mary died. How old was Alice?”
Sam took a deep breath before answering. “She was two, Emily was four. Alice doesn`t remember… Emily has some vague memories, but they fade as she gets older.”
Dean suddenly sat his glass down on the table, making it connect sharply with the wooden surface. Both Sam and Lisa looked at him.
“Alice and Emily may not have a mom, but they do have one awesome aunt.”
Dean leaned towards Lisa, giving her a long, passionate kiss.
Sam looked away.
He got up from the sofa, clutching little Alice in his strong arms.
“I`m going to put her to bed.”
He quickly left the room.
“They say it`s haunted.”
Dawn threw her blonde hair over her shoulder as she kept her gaze fixed on the old, abandoned house.
“Really?”
Her eight-year-old cousin Emily, loved ghost stories. She begged Dawn to tell her more about the house.
“I`ve never told you the story?” Dawn asked.
“It`s Helga,” Will broke in.
Dawn glared at her younger brother.
“Shut up, Will! I`m telling the story.”
“Who is Helga?” Emily asked curiously.
“She`s the woman who used to live in the house,” Dawn explained. “This was a long time ago. No one has lived in that house for many, many years.”
“What happened to Helga?” Emily asked.
“She met and fell in love with a man from Denmark,” Dawn said.
Emily didn`t know where that was.
“It`s in Europe,” Dawn said impatiently, wanting to continue the story.
“North Europe. Scandinavia,” Will added helpfully, earning an annoyed glare from Dawn.
“I knew that. It`s one of the countries that border Norway.”
“Actually,” Will interrupted, “Denmark doesn`t border Norway. It borders Germany.”
Dawn huffed. “You`re such a freak.”
“I`m a freak? You don`t know basic geography!” Will snorted.
Dawn punched her brother on the arm. “Can you please shut your cake hole and let me tell the story about Helga?” she hissed.
Will rubbed his arm, pouting. “Fine.”
“So this Helga woman fell in love with a Dane,” Emily said. “Then what happened?”
“Helga and the Danish man got married and lived together in that house for several years. They were very happy. But one day, when Helga returned from doing errands in the city, she found that her husband was gone. He had left her a letter, explaining that he had gone back to his home country.” Dawn paused. “The Danish man had received a letter from his father, saying his mother had died, and he needed to come home. The man had returned to Denmark the same day. He promised to return to Helga as soon as he could. But he never came back.”
“Poor Helga,” Emily whispered.
“It gets worse,” Dawn said. “She waited for months. She was heartbroken and got deeply depressed.”
“What happened to the Danish man?” Emily asked. “How come he didn`t return?”
Dawn shrugged. “No one knows. Finally, Helga couldn`t stand it any longer. She killed herself. Hung herself in the attic, and now her restless spirit haunts the house, forever waiting for her husband to come back to her.”
The three children fell silent. Emily and Will shivered in the cold October night, turning their anxious eyes towards the house.
It was old and run down. It had been painted white, but the paint was peeling everywhere, and some of the planks were rotten. One of the windows was broken, the shards of glass sticking up like broken fangs. The house looked dark and dangerous.
Emily finally broke the silence. “I think we should go home. It`s getting late. Uncle Dean said we weren`t supposed to go far, or stay out for long.”
Will nodded in silent agreement, but Dawn ignored the younger kids.
“Never mind that,” she said, her hazel eyes gleaming. “Let`s go inside.”
“Go inside the house?” Will shook his head violently. “No way!”
The twelve-year-old turned to her brother, raising her eyebrows challengingly. “Are you worried Helga`s ghost will get you?” she teased.
“I`m scared,” Emily whimpered.
“We`re Winchesters,” Dawn said with pride and confidence. “We don`t get scared.”
Grabbing her cousins’ hand, Dawn started walking up towards the house. She called out to her brother: “Coming, Wimpy Will?”
Will was defiantly scared of entering the house, but there was no way he was going to wait outside alone. Dawn would never let him hear the end of it. With a small groan he followed the girls.
“I`m coming,” he growled. “But for the record, I`m totally blaming everything on you if we get caught. You know Dad wants us to stay away from this house.”
“I know.” Dawn walked up to the door. It wasn`t locked, so she could easily push it open. Emily jumped when the door slammed against the wall, fighting a desperate need to turn and run.
Dawn took a step to the side, beckoning for her brother and her cousin to go inside.
“After you.”
“Is the house actually haunted?” Sam asked his brother, who shook his head in reply.
“I`ve checked. It`s just a story told amongst the kids in the area. The house has been empty for years. It`s all rotten, a sharp gust of wind could bring the whole thing down. That`s the reason I`ve told Dawn and Will to stay away from there.” Dean sat down on the sofa, rubbing at his stinging palm. “I just don`t get it, Sammy. What is with Dawn? Why is she so defiant? Not only have I told her and Will countless times to stay away from that old house, I also told them not to stay out so late.”
Sam sighed. “I don`t know, Dean. She takes after you, I guess. She is reckless and never thinks before she acts.” He grinned cheekily at his brother, who shot him an annoyed glare.
“I`ve already delivered two spankings tonight, don`t tempt me to hand out a third.”
Sam laughed. “Jerk.”
“Bitch.”
