He has to wake her because the nightmares are too vivid; the memory is still raw and painful. She seems a little shaken when she looks up at his face, like it takes her a moment to understand. Then she sighs and laughs bitterly to herself, as though it's some kind of terrible joke neither of them understands. He doesn't have to ask what the dream

[Maybe it's just figuratively. But it may not be. Best to keep the important people on her radar.]

It used to happen regularly in my own world. I suppose you could say I used to be something of an important figurehead.

[She can't help but chuckle a little at the imagery.]
What were you figure-heading?

[She's not too interested in religion. Buuuut it must be a world in turmoil, if their figurehead is kidnapped regularly. This could be interesting.]
Is it based around a God, or something?

The people use The Score as a guide in their daily lives, believing that someday, it will lead to the prosperity of the world.

So, basically, if you read this 'Score', you'll be able to see both the past and the future? And let me guess: you have this 'seventh fonon' energy to read it.
... I can see where the kidnapping came from. That must be some ability.

I guess what separates me from most seventh fonists is that I have separate abilities.

And question: I get the seeing the past thing, but why is it called 'the planet's memory' if you use it to see the future? How are you suppose to derive the future from a 'memory'?

My power of the seventh fonon is greater than that of a normal seventh fonist, so I can use a completely different set of techniques. Mine can be used to do things like seal off important passageways, which is what I was primarily kidnapped for. My abductors wanted me to open something that had been sealed by one of my predecessors.
The center of the planet has a concentration of seventh fonons so great it is said to be sentient. Lorelei, as we call this aggregate sentience, is so powerful it can supposedly see into the future as well as remember the world's collective history.
It's quite amazing.

[Or maybe... something forbidden. It sounds like his job description included keeping the sealed places sealed. Maybe it went against the church?]
... Sentience.
That's... only been theorized, since... there's yet to be a blastia that could gather enough aer for the formula to... but if so... aer krenes are directly connected to the planet - maybe what we're supposed to find is the source. But if it's sentient, then... Wait, but if the sentient mass reconstructs the formula itself, it might-
... That's... pretty amazing. Is the fonon a unit of energy, or is the particle of energy? How is it manipulated? Is it like a formula?

Yes, actually. Ancient technology is more or less the only kind we have.
Fonons are particles of energy. When you amass them, they become stronger. Ablast of fifth fonons, for instance, could raze an entire forest. No one has yet proven the existence of Lorelei, but it's been theorized about simply because the concentration of fonons in the planet's core is so massive.
Fonons also comprise everything, and different people have different affinities. Some people can use all but the seventh, some only the seventh, and some people can't control fonons at all. I'm fairly sure it has a lot to do with your body's fonic make-up.
I'm afraid I don't understand much more than that, however.

... Was the technology, by any chance, linked to an ancient civilization or something?
[Oh, but this is just fascinating! This could particularly be linked to the Rizomata formula. Sentience would affect the control of the formula.]
So in your world, your body's made of fonons? ... That's different aer, really. I can't imagine being made up of aer. Is there a direct relation? As in, since you're so good with this 'seventh fonon', are you comprised of seventh fonons? Or are the fonon ratios in your body equal? I'd imagine them to be named after elements, really. No, scratch that. That was a stupid question. If it's possible for them to be unable to control fonons, they are not necessarily not made of fonons. No, I'd imagine that the relationship would only be restricted to the manipulations of these fonons ( ... )

The technology we have comes from an era around two thousand years ago that we refer to as The Dawn Age. The person who founded the world's Score-based religion was from that time, too.
Um, generally fonic artes are used through incantations which create glyphs, but I find it simpler to use the glyphs alone. I'm unsure if I'm a special case or not, though.
And what about you? It sounds like this isn't exactly new to you. Can you use artes yourself?

... the similarities really are uncanny. You don't suppose that ancient civilization self-destructed because of it's technological advances, or is that pushing it a bit?
They're called fonic artes, huh. Another similarity, kinda. It doesn't sound like he understands the direct relation between glyphs and incantations, so it's dissimilar to a formula. Me? Yeah, I can use them, but our artes are based on a different principle. It's more of a balance between technology and math in restricting the properties of a natural substance called 'Aer'. It's practically a science, while, from what you've told me, yours seems to be based more on natural ability.
... You've been helpful. A lot. Um, what do I call you?

And yes, that's correct. If you're not a fonist, you can't simply become one through study.
Oh! I'm Ion. I'm sorry I didn't ask for your name sooner. I'm a little out of sorts at the moment.
