My mother went back to college for undergrad when I started high school. She went on to get her masters degree. We had more than 50 books because we both like to read, however, most of the books were older - either hand me downs or bought at the library's surplus sale. There was original art in our house because both of us created it. My mother, thankfully, owns her home. Sadly, because of its location in a small southern town, its valuation is equivalent to a down payment on a luxury town home here in Chicago. I had my own room because I'm an only child - where else was I going to sleep? I had my own phone in my room because the phone jack was already there and phone company deregulation had already taken place and phones were (fairly) cheap. I took the ACT prep offered by my school in the after hours because it was free. My mom used to take me to museums all the time growing up before we left Chicago. Field Museum, MSI, AI, Shedd, Adler, MNH - you name it, we went. On the free days. It was often cold in the house in the winter because the house was rather drafty and the heating bills would soar. I got used to wearing sweaters and hoodies in the winter.
Hmm, so yeah. I guess this means my upbringing was lower-class. Money was always (and still can be) pretty tight.
