pulling the blanket from his eyes, he crept from the safety of his bed, ventured into the darkness with one hand; the other reached toward Jumi, his guardian bear on the bed, and stole his way to the lightswitch he knew instinctually to be three feet from the ground and two feet from the door, meaning an arms length to our brave adventurer. with a flick, the light was on and any would be monsters long gone by now. aaron felt safe again. he ran back and leaped through the air to land on his bed with a grin on his face. jumi was scooped into the boy's loving arms and they made their way to the bathroom down the hall. shadowey figures filled the hallway and his feet created ghosts in the floor..each step, a creak in the old wooden boards. how many people have died here? he thought. innocence has no shelter from the darkness. the high walls grew taller with each step and the bathroom further wth his pace increased. with a flick of the switch, the bathroom was aglow. light blues set off by darker tiles. two sinks, each with their own settings of toiletry. his fathers' he knew to be the one on the right, although he had a hard time seeing over the counter, for that was where his toothbrush lie as well. this was where his parents helped him to brush his teeth in the morning, helped him to floss his teeth, bathed him when he was dirty, and prepared him for bed. aaron knew that just before bed they would sing him a song and ease him to sleep. jumi was now on the floor and aaron was flushing the toilet. his parents slept soundly and loudly. he could hear them snoring two doors down. and again, jumi was scooped in to those loving arms and paraded down the hallway and bouncing on the bed and snuggled under the covers. he hadnt even noticed the ghosts in the floor. as he lay in bed, his mind drifted to many things. the ducks he fed by the river.. there must have been at least twenty of them! and only one loaf of bread to feed them with.. the bread was gone almost the instant he passed it out. he remembered the roly poly bugs.. how they curl up in a ball when they get scared and just roll away! aaron would have spent all afternoon playing with them if his mother hadnt called for dinner. they ate warm bisquits with gravy, buttery mashed potatoes, some delicious asparagus (aaron surprised his parents by admitting this to have been his favorite part), and some kind of chicken. aaron had never been too fond of chicken and drank plenty of kool-aid to wash away its taste. flick. the light in the hall went out.. "..mom?"..."...moom??".. he heard the ghosts in the floor... "dad?"...he grabbed onto jumi and curled under his blankets in his safest of beds. flick. the lights in his room went out. flick.. not even time for a scream..
GOOD NiGht jumi : )
