can I rant a little about Jon & Kate Gosselin?

I don't watch the now-infamous "Jon & Kate Plus 8" on TLC. Thanks to Facebook friends' statuses, Yahoo! News coverage, and general tabloid hullabaloo, I've gathered that the couple has been having some marital difficulty for the past few months. Ok. So that puts them on par with tons of married couples all over the world. But... but... but... we're on TV! says Kate, constantly. We didn't ask for this, we didn't plan this.

Oh really? You didn't sign a general release form & a contract & a bunch of exclusive deals with TLC & their adviertisers for the rights to film your family 24-7? I assumed, given that you even have a show and that I even know your name at all, that you had done said things. Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I'm fairly sure camera crews don't invade the average home every day without consent.

I've watched the show maybe twice, and both times, I wondered how they had ever gotten together. Kate is a mean, conniving person. Jon's a tool. Ok. So that puts them on par with tons of married couples all over the world. I could get past that. I don't know what draws people together, so I figured it must be their business. Except they never make it just their business; it's the business of their audience.

Apparently Kate goes on speaking tours and I heard something about a book deal. Naturally. That's what the average mom says to herself on a daily basis. "How can I sell my family some more today?" And where's Jon in all this? Sitting at home, with the kids. Or so TLC would have you believe. He needn't get any sympathy from viewers. After all, he's equally responsible for the dissolution of their marriage. A ten-year marriage! Down the drain because they wanted the spotlight. Ok. So Kate's a fame whore and Jon won't put in his two cents.

And herein lies the problem. You want to have a successful marriage? Stop the cameras and work on each other. Honestly. I've been married for a year and I can tell you that what you're doing is the opposite of good marital counseling. I read an article this morning (yes, it is sad) that ended with Kate saying, "The show MUST go on." Seriously? You're about to end a 10-year marriage & your comment is, The show must go on? How can a marriage hope to survive with that kind of perspective. "Well, my marriage is over but at least I get to keep my contract with TLC."

Ugh.

Rant over.

In other sad news, Ed McMahon died today.
