I like David Tennant a lot. I got back into the Doctor because of him, and I think he's a really good actor. But I didn't really like his Hamlet all that much. I think maybe it's because I was having a hard time placing the setting of this version, or maybe I just thought he was playing Hamlet as bi-polar a little too hard, but I was not as thrilled with this version as I expected. Patrick Stewart is excellent as Claudius, though I also wasn't really keen on him also playing Old Hamlet (I guess I didn't like the idea of Claudius and Hamlet as twins.)
Maybe I'm just so connected to the idea of Branagh as Hamlet. That might be it. But, hey, it's still better than the Mel Gibson version.
Quick list - Top 5 Hamlets:
Branagh
Olivier
Derek Jacobi (1980 production in which Patrick Stewart also played Claudius)
Tennant
Maximilian Schell (this was the version that MST3K did towards the end of their run. It's dark and moody.)
