A Virgin Among The Living Dead (1973)

What can be said about a film that feels like a 90-minute long fever dream, then turns out to have BEEN a 90-minute long fever dream? Well, you can say that it's Jess Franco in his prime.

The plot, such as it is, concerns Christina, a girl headed for an isolated mansion in a valley where "no one lives anymore" for the reading of her father's will. Once there, she meets her eccentric relatives (including Franco regular Howard Vernon), and begins having weird dreams about, well, about what I'm not sure. This movie is somewhat hard to follow, and there are dialogue-less stretches, and there's a hell of a lot of nudity, all of which are Franco trademarks also.

In the end, the title's not necessarily misleading, but those expecting zombies should watch a Romero film. The "living dead" of the film's title are more akin to those in the 2004 French movie They Came Back, though in this film, they're a bit more sinister. If you feel, after watching, that you need to see traditional zombies, you can watch the deleted scenes, which feature a fairly long dream sequence apparently directed by Jean Rollin and which has your traditional out of the ground zombies.

Overall, avoid unless you like Franco, incomprehensible flicks, or 70's Euro nudity.
