I was getting ready to write a DVD review of one of his films, and discovered that
Jess Franco, the auteur behind such classic Eurosleaze as
Vampiros Lesbos and
The Awful Dr. Orloff is getting a Goya award this year, which is the Spanish equivalent of an Academy Award. This blows me away.
Franco has had a very extensive career, with over 180 credits to his name, but I couldn't imagine the Oscars giving a lifetime achievement award to someone who's made mainly B-movies, and who has some hardcore on his record.
