gimme_opals 1) What's the character's name? Subala
2) How old is he/she? 49
3) Is the character a boy or girl? A woman.
4) What's his/her race? Human
Appearance:
1) If this character were to suddenly become part of the 3D world, and ended up in a heavily-populated area, how many stares would he/she get? Oddly enough, apart from the purplish hair, she might just squeeze by as normal. Until of course she started yelling at everyone to tell her where she is.
2) Is the character considered normal in his/her own world? .... she's not a horrific monster, and she considers HERSELF an average Jane. I think, however, "normal" is not a word one would typically use to describe her.
4) Would you consider the character as attractive? Depends what you mean by "attractive". I think she's cute, and has what you'd call striking features, but she's not conventionally pretty by a long shot.
Personality:
1) Temper: Look it up in the dictionary, and you'll see Subala's picture next to it.
2) Does the character ever get depressed?: Yes, although she tends not to be mopey for long. A long term depression would probably have her being more angry or anxious than usual.
3) Leader or Follower? Bit of both. I think she's probably more inclined to be a follower, but she runs a pretty tight ship, quite literally.
4) What is the main aspect of his/her personality? Subala is a brat. She's a wonderful, lovable, huggable, complete and total obnoxious brat. Has been and always will be to the day she dies.
History:
1) Does the character have a family of any sort? She has no blood relatives. She considers Kisara's family sort of her own, and she also considers her crew family.
2) Is the character out on his/her own? Yes, by means of a very large fish.
3) Has he/she encountered any traumatizing events? She was 14 when Arshtat zapped Lordlake, and she obviously wasn't closeby, but she would have witnessed the blast. I know that Raftfleet took in Lordlake refugees, so she was probably very aware of the horrors that happened there. Then there was the Succession War of course, which has the same traumatizing events war does. She wasn't necessarily there for the key events, but even to her just serving in the Prince's infantry probably led to her killing for the first time, which wouldn't have been easy.
At Budehuc, she was there for the fire, but hasn't seen a whole lot that's made her blink.
4) What was probably the best time in his/her life so far? I think Subala has a habit of treating every day as the best time in her life. But happier memories would include when she bought her ship, various times of fun and debauchery with her crew, Kisara's "family dinners," calms in the storm that is her friendship with Lun (which I imagine as ongoing if quite distant at this point), and that time when she was just a 16 year old girl and the Prince PERSONALLY asked her to join his army ('course, she had to make him work for it, as a point of pride, but nonetheless...).
Romance:
1) Single? Yes.
2) Has the character developed any romantic relationships? At Budehuc, no. My personal history of her has her hooking up with a few fellow mariners over the years, and maybe there was a drunken night of "experimentation" with her old friend Lun sometime years back, but nothing very long lasting.
3) Virgin? No. Being a 49 year old who's lived at sea most of her life, I daresay she's had similar experiences to a lot of older sailors, and they tend not to be virgins.
4) Does the character like flirting? She likes having someone flirt to HER; she's not a very pretty woman (and the defects in her appearance are exaggerated in her own mind) so she gets quite a-flutter when someone actually pays a bit of attention to her. But she doesn't have the subtlety to be very adept at flirting back.
Symbolism:
1) What animal would you associate the character with? Once a quite rambunctious cub, she's grown up into a helluva mama bear.
2) Musical Instrument? I tend to associate her with the steel drums in the "Game On!" music.
3) Element? Water. Unpredictable, smooth and calm one minute, raging waves the next. I might be influenced by her best Affinity in her game stats, however.
4) Planet? Astrologically speaking, the Moon is a planet, and I'll go with that. Maybe with a dash of Mars. Or maybe Neptune? She's a bit of a dreamer, with that Captain Ahab-like quest of hers (she's way more upbeat than Ahab, though).
Showing the Love:
1) Do you draw your character? Yes. Some of her icons are my own drawings (and others are half-traced, half-hand-drawn), as Konami didn't have the simple decency to provide pre-drawn pictures of her 33 years older than in game.
2) Do you write about him/her? No, not outside of roleplaying. Actually, no, I lie. If it counts, I did a filk of the Nields' "That's My Ship" called "That's My Fish" about her.
3) Do you use him/her in any rpgs? Just this one. Though I wrote up her stats in D&D/Pathfinder that I might use a variation of in an actual tabletop game at some point. (As an aside, characters inspired by Logg and Kisara did show up in a D&D campaign I've been running.)
4) What other ways have you appreciated the character? I have defended her vigorously to my friend I play and chat Suikoden with, as he insists on calling her "the runt." Ungrateful sod.
RANDOMIZE!
1) Is the character wanted for anything? Only if she claims to be Shoon again. ^^
2) What are three weaknesses in him/her?
Obnoxious: Subala likes to yell and isn't always considerate of others' feelings. To her it's all in good fun, but she doesn't quite clock how others might respond. Really, I should play her as a little more obnoxious than I do, but I have a bad habit of holding back so everyone won't be mad at her, which I need to get over. She likes being the center of attention and is quite put out when she isn't.
Brash: She tends to dive into things without thinking, and says things without realizing their full implication until after the fact.
Desperate to Prove Herself: Although it can be an endearing quality, some of her less wise acts are based in the fact that she really wants others to see her as important and useful--and sometimes she "tries to help" where help really isn't needed or asked for, or what she does is more of a ploy for attention than actually being useful. Her self-worth has risen over the years, but it was never much to start with.
3) Strengths?
Brave: The flipside to her brashness, Subala isn't afraid to face down a challenge, and doesn't mind getting a few scrapes if it means driving the bad guy away.
Loyal: She is deeply, deeply, deeply loyal. She has never forgotten a kindness, never forgotten who had her back when she was in the thick of it, and like all Raftfleet women, ready to pay her debts twice over. It's maybe a little odd to see her so protective of the other Succession War vets at Budehec seeing as most of them she hasn't seen in 33 years and they've had the indecency to remain young, but she remembers that they were part of a team once, and will protect them with her life as if that comradeship had been formed recently rather than decades ago. As she's gotten older, her loyalties have also drilled into her a deep sense of responsibility, and she's surprisingly good at taking care of those she's put in charge of.
Gusto: She lives for today, 'cause tomorrow may never happen. She has a great zest for life and isn't afraid to show it--indeed, she will draft people into her celebratory nature whether they like it or not.
4) Does the character drink or smoke (ect.)? She drinks like a sailor. Seeing as she is one, it's not really unusual.
5) What's one quirk about him/her? She considers a good throwdown of insults to be a fun game, and loves arguing for the sheer joy of the energy of it, and seeing how witty she and the other side can be. Unfortunately, some people don't see her "game" for what she sees it as.
6) Does the character have any phobias? The Sun Rune. She's terrified of it, having seen what it can do in her youth. By proxy, that made her rather afraid of Arshtat, but that's slowly ebbing.
7) What could you do to get him/her into a blind rage? Hurt her friends. Take her fish. Insult her looks. Tell her she's a horrible fisherwoman. Step on her feet. Breathe.
8) Does the character like chickens? Sure! Their bones make great makeshift fishhooks, and their meat is excellent crab bait.
The Final Question:
What would you consider your relationship with the character to be like?: If I had the opportunity, I'd love to sit down and have a drink and a chat and a game of cards with her. I'd love her to teach me how to fish, and I'm sure she'd be obliging.
