I just got back from camping with youth group... a few highlights:
- Pastor Lynn’s 135 pound Newfoundland dog, Captain, meeting the neighboring campsite’s 10 pound miniature Dachshund, then snapping his leash in half to start a crazy dog chase...
- Capture the Flag in the dark... of course you couldn't see who was on your team, but we all ran around and yelled.
- Burning things, including but not limited to the whole pile of wood (in one night) half of our sausages (they fell into the fire), several leaves that blew away and came dangerously close to lighting the tents, the tin foil on which we were cooking the sausages, many cups-full of lighter fluid, several pieces of charcoal, and several squirts of bug spray.
- Climbing over the fence (we later discovered it was there for a reason) and scrambling down the muddy hill-cliff through the trees to get to the beach faster (and I’ve got the scratches to prove it).
- Swimming in our clothes in cold Lake Winnebago
- Adele getting us lost on the way back from the beach - but we weren’t really lost, she was just taking us on a detour to let our clothes dry, right? Oh yes, of course.
- Hiking near the cliffs, cutting off the path to climb down said cliffs, which was really a little dangerous but it was fun. Andy came very, very close to slipping off the edge of a big drop-off… we were a little more careful after that. A little. I made it up that hard island rock, though! :-)
- Being given the whole park to roam, free and unsupervised (which is how many of the above incidents came about)
- Waking up at 2:00 AM to go to the bathroom in the outhouse, finding Luke, Joey, Nick, and Danny playing with the fire, coming back and going to bed… and being scared right out of my sleeping bag just a few minutes after I got back when a huge flame burst up… when I went to the window, it turns out that they were “just putting another cup or so of lighter fluid into the fire, and squirting it with my bug spray…” So that’s why I got it back so empty in the morning.
- Going running with Adele and Laura in the morning, and dunking our head under the water faucet so we came back dripping wet
Anyway, it was really fun and I hadn't seen a lot of these people in a long time. So, it was fun.
