FILL 3: Steve/Bucky, any, god a/u anonymous August 21 2011, 00:35:13 UTC
Glad you guys are liking this so far! *hearts;

--

Steve was in heaven.

Well, not completely. At least not what the mortals thought of as heaven. He was partially still in the realm of the gods and now also partially in the realm of humans, splitting his attention between the two as he trotted along at Bucky's side.

He was, admittedly, paying a little more attention to the mortal plane at the moment.

Steve was in his own personal heaven because he was finally here, finally getting to touch Bucky and hear Bucky and smell Bucky and taste Bucky and nothing on his plane could ever compare to this. Bucky's voice was rough and low, his hands gentle and tender, and gods he smelled amazing. Like metal and dirt and gunpowder and so human Steve was worried that his insufficient olfactory system was going to shut down.

"...is that a dog?"

"No, Dugan," Bucky replied, and Steve's ears perked up just at the sound of his voice, "It's a rare Italian squirrel. They grow huge this time of year."

"You're not as funny as you think you are, Barnes."

"I think I'm hilarious."

"Exactly."

Bucky bent down to grab a pot from the camp kit, pouring in the water he'd collected in the canteens, and Steve paused to admire his backside. He'd looked at it before, certainly, and even seen it bare--he tried to avoid watching Bucky while he was bathing out of respect, however he also liked to check in on the mortal randomly--but it seemed so much nicer right in front of him.

"So where did he come from?" asked the British one, who reached out to stroke Steve's fur. He allowed it because it probably wouldn't do to go ripping the arms off of Bucky's friends, but he really just wanted to be petted by Bucky instead.

"Thin air, as far as I can tell," Bucky replied, setting the pot on the small covered fire to boil the contaminants out of the water. He needn't have bothered, as Steve had already made sure it was clean, but it was probably too soon to be telling him these things. "I don't know what he's doing all the way out here, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to let him sleep near the fire tonight."

"He's not just going to stay for tonight, is he?" the Brit commented, amused.

Bucky cleared his throat awkwardly.

"You are such a chump," the Nisei soldier said, but it was in a fond tone of voice so Steve didn't feel the need to growl at him menacingly. Then he noticed the pink tinge that lit up Bucky's ears and had to restrain himself from going over and licking the man for eliciting such a delightful response. Bucky sat down near the fire and Steve immediately padded over to lay down next to him, resting his head in his lap pointedly until Bucky got the hint and started petting.

"So what are you gonna call the mutt?"

Steve raised his head to look at Bucky, who continued to pet him as he looked back. He tried to think 'Steve' at the human but Bucky surprised him, lips curling into a small smile.

"I was thinking of calling him Captain."

There were sounds of approval and agreement from around the fire and Steve settled back down, contenting himself with relaxing into Bucky's gentle petting. He drifted off for a little bit, relishing in the very mortal feelings of warmth and touch and feel.

The serenity was broken a moment later when the red-headed soldier spoke up again.

"So if he's captain, does that mean we can answer to him instead of you?"

HA. I am utterly loving the idea of Steve coming down to earth as a golden retriever. One that just wants to smell and pet his mortal! *hearts*
