The woman behind the badass

Even though he had agreed to allow Clint and Natasha to come along to his mother's for dinner, he still wasn't sure it was a good idea. There were things in Coulson's personal file that no one except the highest ranking members of SHIELD knew about. There were things that were kept secret for no other reason than the fact that people didn't need to ( Read more... )

Clint had to try not to stare. They were assets, having a poker face was a prerequisite, and still he had to actually work at it once hearing her name. He thought about it as they walked into the room but her name, that just hammered it home.

So. Peggy Carter. That just, well, the world made sense now, didn't it. It was enough of a distraction that he didn't even think about both of them being introduced as coworkers. Of course, most people didn't bring coworkers to meet their mother. Most people didn't have coworkers like Natasha and Clint. Most people didn't have Peggy Carter as a mother.

He gave Phil a long look before focusing on Peggy. "It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am." Oh look, manners; one always had manners when meeting Agent Carter. He held his hand to her. It felt like there should be some kind of protocol for meeting her that he didn't know--he was glad he wore the tie though.

Holy shit. That's Natasha's internal reaction of course. Externally she's cool as vodka fresh from the freezer. Her intent had originally been to subtly and skillfully nudge Phil's mother into causing him less anxiety without the woman being the wiser. Tasha is so very good at persuasion but this throws her whole damn plan out the window.

She's glad be took the time to make sure Clint took this seriously now and there's a beam of pride when he's so formal. She knew the guy had it in him to slip in and out of character almost as well as she did but Tasha can tell this isn't an act. Then it's her turn to say hello.

"Ms. Carter. It's an honor." Tasha wouldn't help wondering if her jaw was hanging open a little. She will not fangirl, she will NOT fangirl. "I've heard so much about you." Not from Phil of course. At least not as his mother. Tasha reminds herself she's got the grace and fluidity or a dancer and thrusting her hand out for a manic handshake is not a good idea. Should she curtsy, maybe? Something like that? Hell Tasha doesn't ( ... )

Peggy moved her hand over the controls of the chair to move closer to the pair. A hand offered over to each in turn. "Philip has told me a great deal about both of you. How you're two of the best he's worked with." She sent a smile over her shoulder to Phil. Land here I thought we weren't supposed to talk about me."

Phil ducked his head, looking like a sheepish kid. "My fault I'm afraid. I let them talk me into it. I'll deal with Fury."

The elderly woman waved a hand. "Jack Fury's son has a flair for the dramatic. A bit too much, actually. Now, shall we eat?"

He still considered it to be a state of shock and it took a minute for her words to sink in. Oh, there was more in there. She knew Fury's father, the beginning of SHIELD, it was just a lot. The whole organization was wrapped up in such mystery that its own agents didn't really know that much. She knew everything.

"Yeah, uh, we wanted to meet you." Which of course they had heard so much about Peggy Carter, but not from Phil, not in the sense that she was his mother. "I hope it's not too much to just spring it on you like this, ma'am."
