- Firstly and most importantly: A pest control expert came this afternoon to give our house a one-over. He was a really nice guy who, after about twenty minutes, told Ellen and I that what we have on our hands here is one of the most minor infestations that he's ever seen. It doesn't make much of a difference in that regardless of the size of the problem, the whole entire house still has to be treated... but hearing that a professional didn't think our bug problem was overly large sure did seem to make Ellen feel better. The treatment's going to take a sizable chunk of change to get done, but that's what savings are for sometimes.
- Half-Price Books sent me a bunch of coupons for this week. Today and tomorrow, I can get 40% off one purchase. As I'm not going to be around to use the big 50% off one that you can only use on Sunday, Henry and I drove over to HPB to have a look. I picked up Eno and Plum by Terry LaBan for $3 bucks; I've seen LaBan's comics here or there over the years, but never had the chance to read a collection of them. I also picked up Cerebus: High Society for something like $6 bucks. Cerebus has always been a big blind spot in my comics reading- I've only read one of the big phonebooks that collect the series, Jaka's Story. Most people would argue that I've already read the best that the series has to offer, but I was interested in dipping my toes into other story arcs.
- Today I was contacted by a publicist who works with/for Bill Ayers, the educational theorist and author who was in the news a few years back because of his friendship with President Obama and his connections to The Weather Underground. Ayers has just adapted his book To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher into a graphic novel and the publicist asked me if she could send me a free copy of the book to review AND if I'd be interested in doing a Q&A with Ayers. Now, I'm sure to a lot of folks, this kind of thing would be old hat... but over the course of reading this e-mail, I realized two things:
1. I'm being taken seriously as someone who has something to say about teaching in the 21st century.
2. Bill Ayers has read my comic!
I might be overreaching with #1 there, but it's still very exciting!
