To Move Or Not to Move: Part II

Jan 04, 2012 17:25

First of all, thank you all very much for your responses to our previous discussion post! It seems that by far the majority of the player-base that left us feedback is in favor of a move. Thus we will dedicate this post to open discussion, to laying out what will need to happen before any kind of move were to happen, and to vote once and for all. ( Read more... )

I really think the invite code stuff will be bad (or at least disruptive) longterm. Since this big happy move to DW, account creation has been open and free, but that's not something DW can support in the longterm and not something it really wants to, from what I gather wrt their policies. LJRP culture has a problem with being insular and cliquish already to me, already based half on reality and half on appearances, and I strongly suspect moving over to an invite-only service will compound that problem. I don't think it's a problem wrt actual in-game accounts, because we're already exclusive and require applications, but it's something to consider with the culture at large.

This said, if everyone else moves, it's a moot point, and if LJ remains inaccessible to some players, that's likewise inexcusable.

I don't know how many invites DW are willing to give out or will continue to be willing to give out, but I believe they've said if RP communities need invites they will give out a batch to mods (since RPers are generally willing to pay for accounts!), so hopefully that would curttail some of your concerns, which are perfectly valid and one of my biggest fears about it as well.

Yeah, I'm not worried about invite codes running out, but more the barrier to entry that's intrinsic with invite codes. I'm sure that C&C players would scrape together enough communally, although it's nice to hear that the DW mods are aware of the concern and trying to help with it.

The mods here might be able to ask Denise or the other admins at DW for a mass invite code like the mods at Paradisa did. We got 150 off the bat.

LOL and I as well voted with a wrong account, zeroisafox is me.

However, I would like to state that I am all for a move. I wish it could be sooner, but your reasons are valid. At the very least, though, the import of CFUD should speak a good amount to us about how well DW is handling this. They apparently were excited for that import to stress test their system haha.

Also, I'd be willing to pay for at least one of the comms to help with our move!

+1 on the CFUD import as an excellent stress test.

I voted no, but I'll stay with the game either way. I have no intention of leaving no matter what we do, I love this game and I'll stay with it.

I am glad that we would wait until mid-February to see how other big games transition. I think that's sensible.

The issues about Dreamwidth's servers being owned by third parties, and its system for buying paid accounts, are things that concern me. I do worry that it's just not ready to cope with the whole RP community moving over, and there's a chance we'll end up in the situation that we need to move back to Livejournal anyway. Dreamwidth is as yet an untested commodity. Hopefully waiting until February will give us time to see what happens with other games. I definitely don't want to have to uproot twice.

Also just to say, I've seen all of the arguments for moving on Plurk almost constantly over the last few weeks, and I really don't want to argue the pros and cons of this with anyone. Like I said, if the majority say we move, then I'll move too.
