The "old woman pushing a baby and gets mugged" gag was an oldie but a goodie. Not only did you get to wear fun old lady clothes and sometimes kidnap a baby, it tricked the heroes every time. This time the Joker decided to forgo the live baby, mostly because if Harley caught him with it she might get ideas about wanting kids and he just wasn't ready for that and he couldn't just kill her here to get rid of her.

So, the Joker was dressed as an old woman that looked like she was loaded with money walking through the bad parts of towns. He'd been mugged 8 times so far with no hero rescue, which was really unfortunate for the muggers, as he had to kill them. Still, the special little boy he was hoping to find had to show up eventually, right?

Dick hasn't been Robin for that long, and scenarios like a villain disguising as an old woman with a baby aren't something he's ever come across. It's not even anything he's heard about much, and the possibility that it's a deception doesn't cross his mind when he sees the old lady. She's pushing a baby around, and looking way too rich for the neighbourhood.

He sighs and is grateful that no one has tried to mug her yet (or so it seems, from Dick's point of view) and is going to advise her not to hang around here more than necessary when he spots two guys walking nearby, glancing at the woman, exchanging a look, and changing direction to go towards her. She had been lucky not to get mugged so far. Dick is just glad that he happens to be right here and see it all happening.

He fires a line and makes himself land gracefully in front of the two guys, between them and the woman.

"You both are obviously not on your way to try and attack that woman, right?"

Dick doesn't have any powers, but 95% of the heroes patrolling here do, so they ( ... )

The Joker almost cackled in glee as He-who-wears-panties-outside-his-tights showed up to intercept the two thugs that were moving in on the Joker.

"Oh save me, young hero!" the Joker cried out, trying to make his voice sound as much like an old woman's as possible. At this point the boy was in trouble one way or another, even if he did guess that maybe this old woman wasn't everything she seemed.

He's used enough to the people he save to scream either at the criminals or at him that it's background noise. He doesn't concentrate on it at all. If he had, maybe he'd have heard that it was off, somehow. He just pushes it away like he would any other time and concentrates on the fight that may come.

That is coming, because they don't look impressed at all by the five-foot-four kid in front of them.

Dick lets out an annoyed sigh before he starts the fight, trying to stick between the woman and the guys as he does it, so they won't be getting to her, stealing whatever there is to steal, and runaway.

It works until a third guy shows up saying something along the lines of "What are you guys doing? It was only an old --" and cutting himself off when he sees Dick. Only to manage to reach the old lady before Dick can do anything about it.

Shit. The night was going well.
