Hiei's unannounced visits were almost routine by now, though Yusuke's absence had lessened them somewhat. Sensing the demon draw near was almost a comfort in some way; it was a little bit of normalcy for this place, this apartment. The complete disregard of Blue's presence in the living area was also to be expected. He smiled faintly to himself, turning the page of the book in his lap as he heard Hiei mull around in the kitchen.

"The far left cabinet," he called after a moment or two of rummaging noise.

There was a pause in the rummaging as Hiei stopped to give Blue's advice consideration, and it resumed a moment later as he explored the cabinet in question.

There, to his pleasure, he found a package of spicy jerky. Why did Yusuke have that particular snack food? Well, Hiei didn't care, but it was his now.

He drifted into the living room in due course, mood lighter than it had been since Yusuke's death.

"He'll be out for a while longer," Blue said when Hiei moved into peripheral sight. "He did not say for how long."

"Dumbass," Hiei said, fondness lurking under his dry tone. He was speaking of Yusuke, of course.

He sat on one end of the couch and tore open the jerky package, tossing the top part carelessly away. He would pick it up later, probably.

"I'll just wait, then."

His remarks had a smile tugging at the corner of Blue's mouth. It was easier to read and understand the dynamics that made up Yusuke's friendships as of late--perhaps because he was finding himself more engaged in such things. Less of an outside observer, a little more confident in conversation...even with demons. Perhaps especially with demons.

"The bird," he started, looking up. "Puu? Are such things common in your world?"

"No, of course not. Urameshi is incredibly powerful and pretty damn unique."

He took a bite of jerky and pointed the remainder of the strip at Blue, scowling. "Don't tell him I said that."

Blue bowed his head to shield most of his smile from sight. "I won't."

Hiei harrumphed--he saw what Blue did there--but let it go. He was in a good mood, after all, and was being placated with food.

"I take it you met it, then. The spirit beast."

"Yes." He looked up, genuinely interested. "I've never seen or heard of them before."

"As I said, they're rare even in our world." He let that sit for a moment as he chewed a particularly stubborn piece of jerky.

"Was it friendly?" It was probably relatively clear that Hiei was up to something.

"Ah--" Blue's head tilted a little at the inquiry. Wouldn't Hiei have known? But then, the time was different...though Hiei's tone was a but suspicious. "Yes, he was. I was surprised."

"Ah, as I suspected." Hiei smirked, seemingly to himself. How suspicious.

"I suppose the Detective didn't bother to explain his relationship with the beast."

Blue's eyebrows lifted. Smirking wasn't usually a good thing in Hiei's respect, he'd learned. "No," he replied slowly, wary. "What do you mean...?"

"It's an extension of his spirit. A human or a demon can hide their true feelings, but the spirit beast can't. It's a pure reflection of Yusuke's soul."

Perhaps that knowledge would give Blue a new perspective on what Puu's friendliness indicated.

Of course, the way Hiei was radiating sheer smugness might distract Blue from that thought process. He certainly loved being the one in the know.

Blue considered what was said quietly, looking surprised. He'd seen power manifest itself in several ways since he arrived, but never as something like that. It explained the bond quite well if it was true...He looked back over at Hiei, where smugness was all but a halo of color around him. It made him uncertain of the truth behind his words for a moment.

"It's...a remarkable ability, then," he said, just as carefully as before.

"One that Urameshi doesn't appreciate at all. Typical."

It was probably worth noting, though, that any distrust of Blue that had lingered in Hiei's mind since their first meeting had essentially vanished. In Hiei's opinion, Puu was the ultimate judge of character, and if he liked Blue...well.
