One of the best things about this city, Sari had decided, was that she didn't even have to listen to the tutorbot anymore and Sentinel had failed on all grounds of parenting. Which meant there was no such thing as curfew. Which likely explained why she was out so late, testing her third jet-pack prototype ( ... )

Someone asked if she was okay. Jill let her eyes open and focus again before she looked up. Huh, the person asking kind of looked like a robot or something. Probably dreaming then.

"Maybe," Jill murmured, "Mostly I'm tired."

It occurs to her than although she wants to fall asleep right there, she can't. That would be bad because she's outside wearing clothes that are too big for her and it's not exactly an ideal condition to be sleeping in. But, Jill thinks, one thing at a time.

Realizing that she'd forgotten to transform back, the helmet falls away, metal clicking back until her face and hair are visible as she dropped to her knees beside her to get a better look at her.

"Uh..." she starts, looking a little lost. "I don't think tired even begins to describe it. You were kinda screaming. I thought someone was being murdered. What the heck just happened?"

Jill blinked. No more robot - maybe she wasn't dreaming then. Either way, the person was asking what was wrong with her and um. She didn't have a response for that. Well, she had a response for that but it was just a little bit crazy and she wasn't really ready to tell anyone about that yet. She also wasn't a very good liar so she just blinked again and said the first thing that came to mind:

"I . . . Don't remember."

She couldn't remember - really? That excuse was about on par with cancer as an excuse for why her hair was cut short and she was wearing a wig. Which she was still wearing, thankfully. Jack wasn't stupid enough to leave their current hairstyle on while he was going to prom.

Short tag because I fail and need to get back into things quickly. namesnotalice May 6 2010, 21:19:46 UTC
Sari saw through that one rather quickly, but she opted not to say anything just yet, offering a hand up. She'd just met this girl and it really wouldn't do to push them too much. Maybe.

"You're kinda a bad liar."

Maybe not. Whoops.

Jill took the girl's hand and stood up, "Deeply bad, I know."

There was no sense in even attempting to lie. Her head was still filled with Jack. Jackfears. Jackdesires. Jackthoughts. He hates being confined to the back of her mind. He resents her. He misses Ramie. Jill took in a slow, shaky breath and released it to sort out herself. She was Jill McTeague and she was all girl.

"You can ask me about it another day, promise."

Sari frowned, disliking being kept in the dark, but the girl was a total stranger, and wouldn't it be rude to keep prying at her about something that was obviously very personal? Hadn't she been trying to be more polite since arriving in the City?

"Er... all right, but you gotta promise, okay," she agreed. "I'm Sari by the way!"

Jill held out her pinkie finger. "Well, Sari, pinkie swear?"

It was kind of juvenile and silly, but Jill and Rames had done it a lot and she figured it could hurt any. Pinkie swears were just as good as written contracts in Jill's opinion, anyway, so if Sari ever asked about it then Jill wouldn't actually refuse. She'd just tell her the story the best she could (which tended to not be very good at all) and pray that Sari was chill with it. Although, seeing as she seemed to be a robot . . . Jill doubted her minding somehow.

"You got it!"

Maybe it was juvenile, but Sari had never been anything but. Nine years of human life and she hadn't grown much farther beyond that since her upgrade. Her brain may have started to work faster, but she was still behind. Besides, who didn't like a good pinkie swear? Easier to keep promises when you were willing to look silly for it. Hooking her pinkie around Jill's, she nodded, giving the other girl what might have been a stern look. If she weren't smiling.

Jill smiled back, tired all over but glad that Sari hadn't asked too many more questions. Now that she didn't have to worry about that, something occurred to Jill. She, uh. Didn't have anywhere to stay and she was in a foreign place where um. She didn't really know anyone.

"Hey, Sari? Do you know someplace I can crash for a while? I don't actually know anyone here and I'm deeply lost."

"Huh? Oh, yeah, there's the M.A.C. You're an imPort, so that's kinda like the first place most people stay when they get here. It's not that bad," she answered.

In fact, she had stayed there for a short time when she'd first arrived, but the Autobots had taken her in more quickly than she'd expected. It'd felt almost like home for a short while.

"M.A.C. Sounds just about as good as anything else - I hate to ask this, but could you show me where it is? I mean, you can just give me directions, I'm pretty good at following those."

It was the kind of awkward word-babble that Jill was prone to spewing when she didn't quite know how to handle a situation and was mostly just trying to fill up silence and not overstep her boundaries. Somewhere in her head, she's aware that she's probably not making the greatest first impression, but it's too late to take it back now so Jill just bites her lip and stops herself for talking even more.

As far as Sari was concerned, Jill's impression was one of the best she'd had in the city. Instead of screaming about not being a hero or whining about kidnapping, Jill actually seemed to accept it.

"I can show you," she offered. "It's not that far from here. A couple of blocks, actually."
