The thing about Alex's job as bodyguard to Dazzler for her gigs was that he was out in the heart of the City at late, midnight hours, when the respectable office crowd had long gone home and what lurked instead were the unsteady drunks and the homeless. So when he heard the sound of someone whimpering and then retching in an alleyway he was passing, he paid it no attention at first, sparing only a brief, passing glance.

He started to walk on, but something of what he had seen in the corner of his eye made him pause and think. There was something familiar about that hunched figure that made him retrace his steps in time to see her staggering shakily, unsteadily out of the alley. There was no doubt about it this time, even though his voice was incredulous.

"Lorna?!"

He rushed forward to her. What had happened?! She was in a horrible state.

"Alex?" she whispered, not even bothering to look at him. She could sense his magnetic field, and the sound of his voice always made something click inside her head. No. She didn't want him here, especially when she was like this. Lorna was clinging to control by a simple thread, clutching at it with nails and fingertips, something she couldn't stand for anyone else to see. Especially if that person was Alex.

"Alex...go away."

She just needed to clear her head. Lorna didn't need him.

"Not on your life," Alex replied firmly. He checked her over, noticing and wondering: the way her normally rosy skin was so sallow, the way her breathing was disturbingly shallow, and the beads of sweat running down her temple. She had to be sick with something, and the way events had gone recently for her, he was betting it had something to do with Pestilence. Not the more controlled Lorna he'd journeyed Shi'ar space with, but the more scared and fragile one immediately after Apocalypse had made his move.

"You're sick," he said, now supporting her. "I heard you throwing up back there. Come on, let's get you somewhere warm."

"I'm not sick," she spoke. Which was a half truth, really. Lorna had diseases swirling about within her, but they would probably go when she calmed down. "Alex, go away. You're going to get sick."

Which was true enough if he didn't back off. She needed better control over herself.
