Losing today’s duel bothered Yuugi, but there was more to it than just his Duelist’s pride. Heck, what really upset him didn’t have anything to do with dueling! The past few days had been rough, between the frustration of no one answering his question and the new zombie epidemic. Sure, he wasn’t fighting zombies on the front lines, but that didn’t mean it hadn’t affected him too. Then there was the whole other situation with Anzu’s friend…
Yuugi honestly felt hopeless in the City. He couldn’t throw semi-trucks, run really fast, shoot lasers from his hands or speak different languages. He had to depend on his other self, and all his other friends. That honestly bothered him; back home he could do something because people were normal, that didn’t matter much here.
He was starting to grow a little jealous of people who were given a power by the porter, because they could help other people and themselves.
Arriving back to the mansion, Yuugi was weary from not only the long walk home but from Kaiba’s stupid Solid Vision program too. He wasn’t in the mood to take the bus, and deal with anymore people today. Funny, when he first solved the Millennium Puzzle, he would wonder what kind of fun he’d have. Now because of the City, he hated getting out of bed every morning. No wonder the other self before him shut himself away.
He got to his room, and closed the door immediately so no one would bother him. Taking off his jacket, he let it drop to the floor, and then he collapsed onto his bed from exhaustion. He would need to thank Tess later for standing up for him against Kaiba. Maybe do the dishes.
At least he had fun dueling Rua. He saw some new cards, and Power Tool Dragon reminded him a lot of the toys he had when he was a kid. Yuugi got to experience the full change of M&W’s meta-game first hand, which made him a little eager to try Synchro Summons out for himself. He just wished the booster packs weren’t so expensive, and he had his full collection of cards from back home. There were already cards he knew that would help get monsters on the field faster to meet the requirements of ‘Synchro Summon.’
“You did well today,” the other Yuugi finally piped up.
Yuugi thought he was being a little too quiet after the whole Network thing. It wasn’t like his other self to not try to cheer him up after some awful event in the City. Too bad he wasn’t in the mood to go along with it.
“No, I didn’t. I sucked. Didn’t even get through the first round,” Yuugi grumbled the last bit, while grabbing his pillow to try to cover his head.
He removed the pillow when it didn’t make any of his problems go away.
“I didn’t want to stand around and watch. I wanted to see if I could handle a whole tournament on my own. You know, maybe even duel Kaiba and win,” he went on bitterly.
The other Yuugi chose to keep quiet, listening to what his partner had to say.
“You should have dueled instead, other me. You would’ve won.”
When Yuugi didn’t get an answer, he grunted and threw his pillow at a wall in anger. He wanted to yell at someone, dammit! Even if it was his other self! He couldn’t take this anymore.
He just… he wanted to see his mom, his dad, his grandpa! He wanted to see Jounouchi! He wanted to get his other self’s memories back! He wanted to make Anzu happy! He wanted to win! He wanted to wake up one morning in the City with superpowers, like everyone else! He wanted to help people! He just wanted to be there for someone, and protect them instead of the other way around…
He didn’t want to be on the sidelines anymore.
Yuugi’s eyes were beginning to burn with tears. He just couldn’t bring himself to act strong anymore. He was the weak one, the one that held onto his other self, and used his strength. Not his own.
“… partner.”
“Shut up.”
“You aren’t weak--…”
“I said shut up, other me!”
Yuugi didn’t care if the other people in the house heard him, because he got his wish of wanting to yell at someone. But instead of it making him feel better like he thought it would, it just made him feel worse.
“No, it’s okay. I understand,” the other Yuugi said. “You’re not the only one who feels that way, partner. I think many people here do, too.”
Despite his words, the other Yuugi’s patience was wearing thin. He had very little tolerance for people who put themselves down, but he tried to make an exception for Yuugi. He understood what he was feeling, it was hard not to; they shared a body after all.
Yuugi nodded silently, wiped the tears from his eyes with the back of his arm, and noticed that his other self wouldn’t meet his eyes. He really should have thought about the other people who were brought to the City, too.
It was quiet again. Yuugi thought back to his duel with Rua. Something was bothering him about it, but he couldn't place what it was exactly. He went through every move he made in his mind, trying to figure out if there was something he missed. He couldn't find anything that was wrong with the first four turns, but when it came to the part where he played Magical Dimension-
“Aggh!”
“Eh, what is it?” The other Yuugi was startled by the sudden outburst.
“I can’t believe I was that stupid…!” Yuugi rushed to his jacket, and pulled the deck out of the pocket.
“…Partner?”
“Other me… I could have won!”
“What? How?”
He hurried back to his bed, and sat on it cross legged. He started putting his cards down on the sheets the way the field looked the moment he played Magical Dimension.
“Remember when I normal summoned King’s Knight? And I attacked Deformer Boardon with Skilled Black Magician?” Yuugi looked at his other self, pointing out the cards while he was speaking.
“Yeah?”
“Well… I attacked Deformer Boardon with Skilled Black Magician, then activated Magical Dimension, right? After that I should have tributed Skilled Black Magician instead of King’s Knight, and let Magical Dimension’s effect take out Deformer Remoten! I would have been able to attack directly from there…
“Other me, I…I could have won. I just played them in the wrong order!”
Finding out that he played the cards in the wrong order didn’t make Yuugi feel worse. It was more of a relief than anything, because now it was just an honest mistake. He grinned sheepishly, and gathered the cards together again.
Maybe tomorrow wouldn’t be so bad. Maybe tomorrow Yuugi would think “I hope something fun happens today!” while boarding the bus to do the endless job search again. He could never stay unhappy forever, it wasn’t like him.
“When we get paid again… we’re definitely gonna have to work more on our deck.”
