It was becoming easier to talk about this and that, random things that Paige wasn't really registering. She really didn't even like coffee that much but it was an innocent excuse to be with Jono pressure free. She wondered about what exactly this was.

It was a date, wasn't it?

They were dating.

Was he her boyfriend? FINALLY?

Did that mean they were going to... go beyond kissing?

Whoa.

"So... how is police work going? Busy?"

"It's never not."

Jono's tone was self-deprecating, but he tried to keep it light. Paige was happy; this was good. He wasn't used to making her happy - usually he made her angry, or upset, and he really didn't want to botch it up that afternoon. Whenever she smiled, it would light up her face, and he didn't want that to stop.

"I mean, between Ange coming down with that flu and then zombies all over the ruddy place, I've not had much of a chance to get away from work."

"See? This is why I said you need more down time. And coming from me, that's something." Paige was usually the team overachiever. Was Jono trying to take her spot?

Oh, right. They technically weren't a team anymore... The future was so harsh.

"Zombies... never a break from being a hero. I've been trying to balance that and work so I don't go crazy."

"Seems to be working fine so far." Jono shrugged. "Although you did install a killer security system in your flat the moment you got here, which isn't usually a sign of complete sanity."

Hopefully she wouldn't take that the wrong way.

"Brilliance, maybe," he added, just to be safe. "I mean, I'm a dab hand at technology now since joining up with New Warriors, but it always was your thing."

Paige rolled her eyes but was smiling all the same. She knew she was being placated but at least he was trying. This was more than he usually did.

"I needed something to do to distract me from all of the weirdness. But now I have my hands full and our apartment is protected. It's a win/win, really."

He ignored the eye-rolling in favour of the smiling. That's the important bit, anyway. Jono was continually struck by the fact that Paige smiled at him, for him, here. It'd been years since she had done, at home. So many things had happened between how things were then, and how things were now, and Jono took a breath before broaching a topic that had been on his mind for a while.

"Look, I wanted to apologize," he started off awkwardly. "About the weirdness, that is. The talk with Ange the other night probably wasn't... it maybe wasn't such a brilliant idea on my part to have you there."

The smile slowly faded into a more neutral expression-- concerned, a little sad. It felt... uncomfortable to have Jono apologize for something like this. It made her want to tear at her skin (not literally) and squirm away.

"Of course I should have been there. I know that for you guys, it's all in the past but I still consider us a team. I didn't mind sharing the burden of something like that with you. All of us had to be there."

It was probably the hardest for Jono and Monet, since they had actually lived through it. To her, it seemed like a cruel dream, once she could ignore now that he was here in the city. She reached over and put her hand over his, feeling brave.

"I'm fine; are you?"

"I wasn't, at first," Jono admitted, and turned his hand over so that he held hers.

"It gets easier, but I don't know that I'll ever be able to forget it. I couldn't even bloody well make it to his funeral. Some team." Some friend he turned out to be.

"Then you should make the most of having him here. That's what I want to do. With both him AND Jay," Paige squeezed his hand a bit, hoping that he couldn't feel how tense she really was. The topic was making her nervous, anxious, and just generally like she might throw up at any given moment. It was so easy to forget, for a few moments, that nothing was wrong. And then she remembered what was going to happen.

The future was uncertain and dark. She didn't especially like the things she was seeing or hearing about it. But for Jono's sake, Paige wanted to at least pretend she was okay with it.

"That's - yeah. I mean, that's part of why I can't ever hate being here. Back home, it's been years since I've seen anyone but Jubes"

The topic was making her anxious, Jono could tell, and he could have kicked himself for bringing it up. He squeezed her hand in return, hopefully in a reassuring way.

"It's not so bad if you can think of it like that."

She wanted to tell him that she didn't care about the future, that if they could just stay like this, together, then it was fine. It was probably naive of her to think so and Jono would probably call her out on it, so she would keep the thought to herself.

"It could be a lot worse."

Someone had to have optimism here.

"Truth," Jono admitted. He pushed his empty cup away from himself and looked up into Paige's eyes. A stray piece of hair had fallen across her forehead, and Jono told himself that reaching across to tuck it behind her ear was both weird and probably wouldn't go over well, and so kept his hands firmly where they were.

"I didn't mean to get all doom and gloom on you, luv," he said, and moved on to a lighter topic. Sort of. "How's things with you and Monet, then? She's not still bringing home strange men, is she?"

ahhmahlawd March 22 2010, 01:30:43 UTC
"Not that I know of. And apparently that guy she brought home wasn't so strange after all," Paige shrugged a bit, wondering who was supposed to let go first. She would have been fine if they kept holding hands but they were going to have to get up eventually, right?

And Jono wasn't really the PDA type, to say the least.

"Just strange to me. Since I wasn't expecting someone to be there when I got out of the shower."

"Still, understandable it would throw you a bit,"

Jono's not the PDA type, no, but sitting across the table from Paige was tempting him to test that particular aspect of his character. Which is what led him to say what he did next.

"D'you want to go for a walk? I mean, it's nice outside, and the park's not far."

Well, in a manner of speaking. It was only far if they were planning to walk to the park. Which he wasn't.

Oh. Oh. He wanted to--

Oh. Okay. Paige was okay with this.

"Yeah. That would be nice."

Was this another date? Or part of this date? Was this even a date? She just didn't know anymore. Maybe it was better not to stress about it and just go with the flow.

Jono held the door for Paige on the way out; it really was a beautiful day, one of the first really warm days of spring. The sun was shining, birds were chirping, and it was all-around too bloody cheerful. For once, Jono didn't quite mind, however.

Once outside, he turned to Paige and took a breath.

"Er, so the park's actually kind of a ways away. I was thinking that we could fly there, though. If you don't mind, that is."
