[explosions, burning buildings, and caged car death traps are pretty much old hat for a guy like Superman, but he knows better than to snub them for bigger things, especially when he's closeby. without his superbreath, he couldn't just cool it off. without his superspeed, he couldn't just exhaust the flames. where was the Flash when you needed him?
that would have to wait until he got all the people out safely. it wasn't another exersize in limitations; people were in trouble, and that came first. as quick as he could, he zipped in and out of that three-story building, scooping up the trapped and carefully setting them out on solid ground. when his x-ray vision saw the place empty, it was time to help the arriving firefighters with the blaze.
slower, maybe, but still faster than your average human. he spun, an old trick he learned years ago, and drilled into the water main and up through the bottom of the building going up. not his favorite way to water a fire, but it'd have to do. definitely not his favorite anymore...he wasn't immune to the heat and the hurt here. but that wasn't important.
with the building doused and spared more damage (than it already suffered), he flew back into the makeshift geyser, sealing up the piping and giving those unsuspecting citizens their water pressure back. he hoped to apologize for that.
wet, a little scratched but no more worse for wear, Superman flew out of the hole and onto the street where the small crowd of victims and rescue workers (and the spectators rushing in) were clustered.]
