Scott had definitely noticed that Suzi had been avoiding him. While he couldn't exactly blame her, he decided that it had gone on long enough. If she wasn't going to face her issues with him, he'd make her.

While she was walking down the hallway, he stepped out at the end of it, arms crossed over his chest and staring straight at her.

"We're going to talk about why you're avoiding me Suzi," he said in a tone that would let her know he meant business. "Right now."

Uh oh Suzi thought. The world was so unfair. She was a deer in headlights. Well it was Scott, so a deer in optic blast range. She thought she'd been so careful too. Well, it didn't mean that she couldn't try to get away.

"Hey. Now's not a good time," Suzi started, shaking her head. "I've got a lot of homework I should work on. And really I think you're being silly."

She tried to start backing away, "I, uh, have been really, busy." She avoided looking at him in the face. She could feel herself trying to block anything that had to do with how she felt. The reasons why she was avoiding Scott. Keep it light, she thought frantically, keep it light.

"Suzi, we're going to talk about this now," Scott said, not taking any excuses from her. It wasn't exactly easy for him to do this either, because with the way she couldn't look at him he could tell that she was either angry or ashamed of him, and it didn't seem like she was all that angry. At least not just yet.

Suzi's eyes flashed at Scott's tone. It was clear she didn't have a choice. I guess that was what got things done. To take away choices. Suzi's throat tightened at a memory of Megan crying. Shoving it away she held her head high and looked at Scott.

"Fine. Do you want to do this here?"

"I'm fine with it if you are," Scott said, resisting the urge to shrug. He didn't want this to seem casual, because it wasn't. Suzi was obviously... out of sorts about something and Scott could guess what and he didn't want to trivialize her feelings.

"No I'm not. I don't want to talk to you," Suzi snapped.

"Why not?" Scott asked, not reacting to her anger. It was one of the things that made him such a good leader, being able to bury his feelings away so they didn't affect his judgment.

Suzi looked at him. He was so...in control. And she didn't feel that way at all.

"I don't trust you. And I'm supposed to. I have to follow you. But I don't know what you'll do. And I am just...angry every time I see you."

"How come?" he asked, although he already knew that answer to that. He could understand her frustration, he felt something similar to it when he had learned how the Professor had betrayed them all.

"What." Suzi asked incredulously. She looked at Scott's face trying to discern his meaning. Caught in her emotions, she saw nothing.

WAS HE SERIOUS? Suzi thought angrily. HOW DARE HE? HOW COULD HE JUST FORGET?

Suzi had been striving to match Scott even tone for somewhat even tone. But she was not going to be condescended to.

"You know how come. But I will lay it out for you. In case you've forgotten. Two other X-Men pinned down Megan and M'stra and you killed both of them. YOU KILLED THEM!"

"I know," he said, his voice and face sounding and looking pained.

"And I haven't forgotten, because I play that image over and over in my head all the time," Scott continued, his voice very quiet. "And I see that girl's pain every time and the only thing that keeps me from losing it is knowing that because of what I did, a very sweet and kind girl doesn't have to watch herself hurt and kill the people closest to her."

Moments passed. Suzi said nothing.

"How could you do something like that? There had to be another way," Suzi replied. "I thought our reason for being X-Men was to help people like her. I don't see how killing her like that was the answer. Even if she did end up going home."

Suzi was desperately trying not to cry. "You're not supposed to be someone I doubt."

"Because I didn't see another answer," Scott said, being completely honest. "And I had to put myself in her place. I've been in her place. If you could watch a twisted version of yourself hurt and kill your friends, hurt and kill innocent people, and there was a group of people there who could stop it by killing you, would you want them to end it or let you hurt them and then have you go kill more people so they could devise a better plan?"

"It might not have happened that way!" Suzi protested. "We can't ignore what she wanted but..." Suzi trailed off, not sure what she could add to that.

Her heart felt bruised because she could understand what Megan had been asking for at the time. But death at the hands of X-Men was serious, weighted with consequences.

"So...the X-Men do kill."

Scott was silent for a moment, because that was a very heavy statement to reply to, one that was far, far more complicated than Suzi even realized. Still, it deserved a response.

"I never would have done that if people didn't come back in this place," he said. "That doesn't make it any less serious of an action, but it was a factor. And the X-Men don't kill their enemies but sometimes, unfortunately, we kill our friends to save them from something worse. If you want to avoid me from now on, Suzi, I understand and I'll respect that. But I hope you don't leave. We need people like you who are willing to do things like this."

Suzi stared. Maybe it was her, but half of what he said didn't make any sense. Okay, death wasn't final in the City. Instead you might remember everything about how you died and maybe it was even painful. But at least you came back. As a tactic, sure, Suzi could see why that would be useful. But the rest?

Don't kill enemies, kill our friends to save them. She could not even fathom that. "I--," Suzi started before cutting herself off. Death was easy. You didn't have to fight so hard if you were dead. Maybe that didn't make it right or even brave, but she couldn't decide that for anyone.

She took a deep breath before facing Scott. "Willing to do the hard things? I joined X-Men before 'porting here because I believed in it." Looking down at the X on her belt she admitted, "I still do."

"It's gonna take some time Scott. We're not okay, but I'm not going to leave."
