"Hey, hey, all right, listen up, people!" he says, getting a little of that authoritarian bark back, but keeping that grin of his. "I've got somebody here I'd like to introduce to you assh- *ahem* - roughnecks."
He was never good at watching his mouth, but it's worth a try. For at least a little while. Since she's obviously turned into a guttermouth like him anyway...
"This is my daughter, Lucy. Twelve years older than I remember her, but it's Lucy McClane all the same. Lucy, these are the guys. Most of them are jerks, but they're the best class of jerk we have in this dump."
Then, a look at Shawn prompts the second announcement.
"Keep in mind that, in my head, she's still thirteen years old! What that means is if you touch her, if you try anything, or if you look at her funny, I'm busting you in the mouth. Is that clear?"
Oh, Shawn saw that look from John. He grinned and gave him eyes like that of a baby angel, but everyone should know by now to keep their daughters away from Shawn. He was quite~ the scoundrel in his hay day and was still pretty good with the flirting though it was mostly harmless. Mostly.
"Shawn Spencer, resident psychic detective," he waved at her. "Looks like we're going to be seeing a lot of you around the station."
"Are you thinking of following your dad's footsteps?" He knew a thing or two about legacies. As much as Shawn was trying to avoid it, he unknowingly stumbled into his father's path and he couldn't imagine doing anything else now.
"Uhhhhhh." Hi, John. Lucy shoots a nervous look at him before looking back at Shawn.
"Actually, about that, I was thinking of doing the academy thing back home, lining up a job..." She just... trails off. "I hadn't told anyone yet though, really."
"Not so bad. My dad wanted me to be a cop and make my way up to detective, but--" OK, too much personal information. Time to wheel back, Shawn. "It. Didn't work out."
"And now you're a psychic detective." She could look incredulous, but it's ... not the weirdest thing she's heard in the past day. Plus, superpowers. Whatever, it could happen.
She pauses, but it's only for a split second. "I've heard you bitching about it for years." There's a smile if you look really hard, but she makes a talking gesture with her hand. That is some sass.
Shawn grinned, wiggling his magic fingers. "It took me about ten years to finally come clean with my gift and I don't regret a day of it."
Off to the corner, John was having a little argument out of the side of his mouth with his daughter dearest. Looked like the exact opposite of what his own dad and him had to go through. Heh, funny.
For John she moves into a defensive stance again, arms crossed over her chest. "I want to help people. I'm sick of watching people hurt others, and if I can help stop that it's reason enough for me. I know I can't go back in time and stop things that happened before, but if I can take down the assholes that would do it again..."
... Oops, got a little personal there. "Plus I know some good cops, that do good things even if they get shit for it sometimes." That's you, John.

His eyes don't leave Shawn.

"Uh, hi." Well, at least she's used to it.

So she's dubious but friendly enough when she smiles (faintly) at him. "Nice to meet you," there's a pause before she admits, "and probably, yeah."

"Why do you want to be a cop?"
As if she's going to say it's because she loves her daddy and he's a hero or something.
