Rue sat by the pond, watching the reflection of the sunset in the water. A chilly breeze ran through the park and cut right through her thin clothes, but she made no attempt to move. In the tree above her head, a small group of crows sat, peering down at her. The crows always seemed to follow her lately. She couldn't get them to leave.
She had not intended for this to happen. When she took Mytho, she hadn't thought of any particular plan, all she thought of was how much she wanted to see him. Then that still wasn't enough, and then she'd started thinking about Fakir, and then...
And then, somehow, things had gotten out of control. She had gotten out of control.
She didn't regret anything, not exactly. If that green woman hadn't showed up, she would have finished Fakir, and she would have been glad. She didn't really even regret the lie. It was cruel, yes, and it would eventually be found out, but that didn't matter.
What mattered was that, after all that, he still didn't stay. He didn't even understand what it meant. Would it even have mattered to him if she hadn't been lying? No, without his heart, nothing would. Especially not her.
