[it's become innate for her to understand where people of Elaine's caliber are, and how to find them. quite suddenly, without any noise or special effects, Ai is walking on the street, a few yards behind her. nobody else seems to notice, because she doesn't want them to.]

[ Elaine notices, because at close distances, she would be hard-pressed not to sense supernatural auras, and she recognizes it as Ai's because Elaine has come to think of the other as a sort-of friend here and her signature is a familiar one. The only sign she gives that she's aware of the other girl's presence, however, is a slight pause and then a slowing of her pace, giving Ai the chance to catch up if she wanted. ]

[Ai knows that those who Elaine had been close to are gone, now--the feeling of departure was so blatant that anyone with a sense for them would have noticed--and assumes that she will be upset. although the emotion is nothing she's been personally acquainted with for a long time, she understands its nature to a point. silently, she closes in.]

[ It hasn't been difficult to realize that Ai prefers silence, and Elaine is happy to walk together without words for a while, greeting her with a nod and a smile. She had expected to walk alone tonight, but Elaine finds that she appreciates the company. And when she does speak, she chooses a light topic. ]

Thank you for coming to ice cream with us last weekend. I wasn't sure if you'd want to, but I'm glad you did.

[it's more an observation than any actual expression of gratitude. there is a little something different in her face, to be fair; it's not as though the expressionless aspect has slipped, but perhaps it's a little softer, in the eyes and the mouth. her voice is slightly more expressive, if you've heard enough of her to measure the difference. other than that, she is the same girl who dipped her legs in the fountain little more than a month ago.]

[ Between Lucifer and Mazikeen, Elaine's learnt how to read between the lines very well and her smile brightens a little as she looks over at her stoic companion. ]

[ The pause before Ai's affirmation does not faze Elaine; in fact, the one word Ai does let fall from her lips is more of a surprise, though a pleasant one. She had sensed the other girl's discomfort around her at first, though she didn't know -- and did not ask -- why. Elaine is glad the sentiment seems to have diminished now. Perhaps it is that that makes her, tentatively, ask her next question. ]

Does the lack of an afterlife here bother you too? An afterlife that we can sense, at least. [ she knew it bothered Nico, and she knew that Ai also had duties in that regard. ]

[to an extent, it does. not as it bothers Nico, Ai assumes; he appears to be tied to the realm in a way she never was. still, it is strange not to have its presence. she has begun to consider, in the back of her quiet mind, whether or not the humans of this place have souls to lose.]

[ For her part, Elaine thinks that maybe, for those who can usually feel such things, whatever afterlife exists here is blocked for them. For the part of her that's still acutely aware of her role and responsibilities, Elaine is curious; she's been looking into alternative afterlife arrangements after all. She's quiet, considering. ]
