It was strange how many things in his past had followed him over the years, and frustrating to see how they continued to affect him and cause pain long after their rightful time. If he had only been part of the battle... how many would have been saved? How many could he have helped to protect?
But that was wishful thinking; he knew deep down that he would have become yet another casualty of the fight. A monster that size shook the ground as it walked, and he'd heard stories of what had happened when the two earthmovers got involved. He would have been killed with the rest. It had been more appropriate for him to help at the clinic, and so he did.
But now his best friend was missing, and he could not help but feel responsible.
Edgeworth carefully pulled a chunk of rock away from a pile of rubble, ignoring the bite of the sharp stone edges as they cut and bruised his hands; as fit as he was, he had never done very much manual labor in his life.
If he mumbled a broken please, it was too quiet for anyone--even Maya--to hear.
