Especially after her training with the police, Maggie realized she needed to brush up on some hand-to-hand. Cass had told her she was welcome anytime -- and Maggie had sparred with that nice Miss Summers that one time here as well.

She wandered in, her nose in a book as usual (it appeared to be an AWFUL harlequin romance with Fabio on the cover), a duffle bag in her other hand.

Cass had noticed Maggie the moment she entered the dojo--it was difficult to overlook someone that tall, after all. She smiled and silently closed the distance between them, wondering if Maggie would notice her or if she was too engrossed in her book.

"What's that?" she asked suddenly, trying to bend around and peer at the cover of the book.

Cass was very good at quiet, and while Maggie was good at being alert when she needed to be, she wasn't exactly on her guard. So Maggie didn't notice until Cass was right beside her. She was a little startled, but smiled.

"It's a romance novel."

Cass wrinkled up her nose at that. Yuck. She glanced at the cover again and quirked an eyebrow at Fabio.

"His hair is, uh..." Long? Flowing? Didn't seem to go with his body? "...weird."

"Yeah," she agreed. He wasn't really her type, but the over the top language in the book was entertaining. And she was a sucker for a love story, even a badly written one. "He kind of looks like a shampoo commercial come to life."

She closed the book and pocketed it. "How are you?"

"Good. Here to train?" she asked, getting right to the heart of Maggie's visit. She certainly hoped it wasn't to discuss literature.

Maggie nodded. "I need to sharpen up. In case I can't rely on paper. Do you have time to spar?"

"Sure," she said with a grin, bouncing back out onto the padded floor in the center of the dojo. She stretched her legs and arms for a second, but it wasn't like she really needed much warming up after training for most of the day already. She just wanted to give Maggie time to get into position and ready.

Maggie put her stuff her in locker and, following Cass's lead, stretched a bit as well. She as usual had been reading all day so she took a little more time to warm up.

She stepped onto the padded floor and bowed, then took her stance.

Cass returned the bow, then took up a stance of her own. For a change, she attacked first--darting forward and throwing a quick but not very hard jab at Maggie's midsection.

She was used to Cass making her take the first move, but she'd also been training with the police and doing a lot of dodging. She sidestepped the punch--that part was easy.

But a little too slowly, she remembered to try to grab Cass's wrist to drag her forward as she punched.

With anyone else, the delayed response might not have mattered. By with Cass, it was too late. She ducked low so that Maggie only grabbed empty air, and aimed a quick sweep at her ankles.

Maggie let herself start to fall even before the sweep connected, somersaulting out of the way. She came to her feet and charged forward with a jab.

That was a good move, even Cass was a little impressed. She smacked Maggie's hand off-course and then went to grab it at the wrist, and hopefully perform a judo throw on Maggie as she twisted her body around.

Maggie felt herself being unbalanced, but swung her hand around to grab Cass's wrist, to hold onto her as she was thrown, in hopes of taking Cass with her.

Cass smiled when Maggie grabbed her, sending her crashing to the ground with her. Most people would have just tried to break the initial hold, but that move was interesting. But luckily, she was just as skilled at ground fighting. She quickly spun around after the initial impact and moved to pin Maggie to the mat.
