The second the library opens for the day. vivi_sorrow January 19 2012, 21:39:05 UTC
Vivi was waiting at the doors and went in as soon as they opened. He started to head over to the catalogue to find what he was looking for when he saw Maggie shelving with a strange paper doll thing.

He shrugged and went over to her. "Good morning Miss Maggie."

Maggie looked down at the boy and smiled. "Good morning, Vivi. Are you here about helping? Or are you looking for some books?"

Vivi shook his head. "I'm in need of a book to borrow over the weekend. I'm doing some painting and I could use a book with advice on how to make sure the paint stays where I want it to and doesn't run in the rain or anything."

Maggie was impressed. "A writer and a painter? You're full of talent."

"I'm sure we can find something in the art section, come on." She waved to him to follow her. As she did, she flexed her hand, and the giant paper doll collapsed into paper, the component sheets of which flew up her sleeve. "What kind of painting are you doing?"

"Well... I haven't really tried painting much before, that's why I need the book," Vivi admitted.

He took a couple of seconds to reply to her query - he was apparently too busy watching the paper doll go away. "Um... do you remember how I mentioned the Eidolon Wall in my book? The place where the summoners had pictures of all the eidolons they knew of? I... I've been feeling a bit homesick, so I wanted to make a copy of it here, and I've found the perfect place to do it too. I just... need some guidance."

"Well, there's different kinds of paint. Oil..." she pulls one book off the shelf; "water color," she pulls another; "and acrylic..." she pulls another book.

"I don't know a lot about painting myself, but I guess if you were painting on a wall, you'd want the first or last." She paused, scanning the shelves. "Here's a book about murals..."

She could go on like this for awhile.

Vivi stops her when they get to outdoor murals. "That'll do quite nicely - it's exactly what I need."

"Do you want me to come in on Monday and help with the shelving?"

"Where are you painting it?"

She considered. "I'm usually not in Mondays, but if you want to, I can give you a key to the library. I think that would be okay, as long as you keep it safe."

"There's a group of old buildings in a quiet part of the City. One of them is a round brick room that's just the right size to fit the whole Wall. It's got no roof but it shouldn't rain for the next few days and I can always use some fire magic to help dry the paint if I really have to," Vivi said.

When she offered him a key to the library, his eyes went wide like she'd just given him the keys to the kingdom. "I'd... yes please! I swear I'll keep it safe!"

"Sounds like a cool spot." She chuckled (which was more of an amused "hmph") at the suggestion of magic. "Just be careful not to scorch the picture."

"Come on then," she said, signalling Vivi to follow her to the circulation desk. She opened the door to the librarian's office beyond and started going through desk drawers. "I'm sure I have a spare... here." She pulled it out and handed it to him.

Vivi handled the key with surprising care and awe, like it would break if he dropped it, and he stowed it in an inside pocket of his coat.

"Thank you, Miss Maggie! I promise I'll keep it safe and help out in the library as much as I can," he said. Of course, he'd just been given unrestricted access to a library...

Maggie was only too pleased to give anyone who loved learning and books unrestricted access. Books shouldn't be locked away, and she'd leave the library unlocked generally weren't there other things to keep safe -- the money box where fines were collected (although Maggie rarely enforced that), the computers, and the AV equipment.

"Just be sure to lock it when you're done. There's some expensive equipment here."
