It is a very sad thing that nowadays there is so little useless information. )
And she had just finished purchasing everything required for her costume, exiting a particularly fancy boutique with the fishnets secured in a bag. As she reached into her coat pocket for her music player, something, a heavy feeling in her gut, told her to look back up.
She did, and any warm feelings she had dissipated rather quickly, as if they were never there in the first place.

Gotham socialites deserved nothing less, wasn't that right?
"Ms. Kane." An emphasis on her surname gushed from his smile. "Looks like we've finally run into each other."
Reply
"It's as if it were fate itself." She said coolly.
Reply
"Is it?" His tone matched his face. "I was hoping we'd make acquaintance in person."
Reply
"Really now?" A slender eyebrow arched. "Should I be flattered?"
Reply
"It's nice to see one preparing." Eddie inclined his head to the bag. "Costume material, I presume?" It was annoying, when he did that. Deducing the activities of others without invitation. It was annoying and he knew it.

Of course, that conversation about Renee didn't help.
"I must be the exception," her nostrils flared, like she had caught a whiff of something soul. "Of course."

He knew her through the circles he had tried so hard to sneak into, through his wealthy and connected clientele. He knew what words would prickle, whether true or not.
"Who wouldn't call you exceptional?"
Reply
"I can think of a couple of people," she said, nonchalantly. Catherine was at the top of the list. "My ego's fine but thanks for the compliment, anyway."

Eddie made his circle around, glancing over. It was tempting to simply provoke her, very tempting. But the image of civility was a crucial one, especially on the very public streets.
"Halloween plans?"

But his question caught her by surprise. It showed on her face and she couldn't feign anything else. Then again, Felicia had mentioned over the Network she and Nygma were split. Maybe he was actually completely unaware of their plans.
"Dancing," she answered without much hesitation.

He stopped before her, very close. Face to face.
"Unless you simply have faith in our system of defense?"
Reply
"We've survived crises back home." She paused, waiting for him to take a step back. A warning pause. "But I do have faith even if others don't." She finally said, with a subtle edge to her tone.
It was true. She didn't doubt the capabilities of all those in the City staying to fight or help evacuate. Almost felt like home.

All the more reason to press.
"But faith is such a funny thing, isn't it? There's no promise to it -- only expectation. Hope. Belief. Virtually unprovable things, correct? So why do so many feel so invested?"
Reply
Eventually, she gave into instinct and cocked her head back an inch or two.
"I don't think you're that dumb to come up with a general answer." She said, although reluctantly at even the slightest and unintentional stroking of his ego.
Reply
Eddie eased back, folding his arms.
"See? You can be charming," was all he said in response. A beat followed, an expression changed. "You've been in conversation with Felicia."
