[Clark is dutifully manning the grill and the smell of cooking steaks is wafting through the air. He's more than happy to take special requests, and there are also burgers and hot dogs available if anyone would prefer.

He's gone more or less utterly unimaginative with a farmer costume-- flannel shirt and overalls, with a shoutout to the holiday, of course, a trucker hat festooned with bats. Despite his care to the grill, he's certainly more than happy to indulge in conversation.]

[Here, Clark, have a small, unassuming young woman dressed as... a small, unassuming young woman with tiger-striped cat ears on. Yep.]

Medium-rare, remember?

[He smiles over at her and pulls out the exact steak he pointed out over the network, tossing it on the grill.]

Medium rare, coming right up. I like your cat ears.

Thanks. I like your farm boy outfit, it looks good on you. Even with the bats. I hope they're all securely fastened to that hat; wouldn't want to have seared stuffed bat for dinner.

They won't be coming off any time soon, I promise.

[He laughs a little.] It's kind of a cop-out costume, though. I grew up on a farm.

[Ariadne snorts a little.] I think I probably win the biggest cop-out costume. At least until Arthur shows up.

Hey, putting any effort into it at all is a show of good faith in my book.

I had to do something. Zatanna signs my paychecks, for the time being anyway. [That's not, of course, exactly why she wore the kitty ears.] So what do you do for a living, or what are you planning to do here in the City, I suppose?

I'm a journalist, actually. And, uh, I guess I'm lucky enough that I have a lead that I might get to do the same thing here. I'm glad, I'd hate to get rusty.

Oh, cool. That's really lucky. I've had the same sort of luck, really. Already had some people here I knew, from home, and they were able to help me get started doing what I want to do.

It's definitely nice to have people you know from home when... this happens to you. I'd probably still be wandering around like an idiot if I hadn't run into Zatanna.

[And he pulls her steak off the grill and puts it on a plate, handing it over to her.]

There you go. Medium rare.

That's pretty much my story. And Zatanna is a good friend; or at least, she has been to me since I've been here.

[Ariadne grins a little.] Smells delicious.

She is, isn't she? I mean, all I did was interview her a couple times and she's willing to put me up. I think that says something good about her.

[He grins back.] Hope it tastes as good as it smells.

Yeah, the only reason she knows me is because a friend of mine is her manager here. She's been very nice to me.

[She grabs a knife and fork, smiling, and takes a bite.] Yum.

Oh, good, I'm glad you like it. I would have hated to have saved that one especially just for it to turn out all wrong.

Did you stick a post-it note on it like you said you would? [Om nom nom good steak, Clark.]
