Through hard-won experience, the police force had gradually developed special protocols for situations that were beyond the capacity of native officers to handle. When a 'Code X' went out over the radio, it meant that the nearest Import officer was urgently needed and that ordinary cops were falling back. It was that code which had summoned Jack Bauer deep into the unnatural fog clinging to the lower areas of Manhattan.
His SUV pulled up outside of a Superior Purchase store, its outline half-hidden behind Mist. Red and blue lights blinked in the cloud, police cars and ambulances already on the scene. Jack frowned as he got out. He hated this fog- the sickly sweet smell of it, the strange oily feel it had on his skin. And there was a warning on the Network that it was more than just unpleasant, that it was deeply dangerous. He put on a gas mask and headed towards the lights.
Jack could hear a ringing noise coming from the store, piercing and incessant. Someone had pulled the fire alarm to evacuate the place, and it was still going. Jack approached the Sergeant in charge of the perimeter, a red-faced man covering his mouth with a handkerchief.
"What have we got?" Jack's voice was impersonal and indistinct through the mask. He heard a quick outline of what had happened. A pack of large animals or monsters had charged into the store and attacked without warning. Shoppers and staff alike had fled the store in a panic. At least three people had been bitten and were now being treated. The first officers on the scene had been ambushed upon entering the building and forced to fall back, badly wounded. As they were stitched up, they had fumblingly described furry, misshapen things with 'nasty, big pointy teeth.' About the only good news was that no one had died yet and the store was confirmed as being completely evacuated.
"All right, I'm going in to take a look. I want your people to make sure that nothing gets out past me." Jack drew his weapon. The store was large, and there wasn't a tight perimeter set up around it yet- the Mist was making driving and navigating difficult for people who weren't Jack Bauer. Waiting for backup raised the risk of the creatures slipping out and attacking more people. Still, as he took up position by the front entrance and steeled himself for whatever he might find in there, Jack thought that he wouldn't exactly mind some company right now.
