Kate woke to the sharp buzzing of her alarm clock, blaring beside her bed and the timestamp blinking repeatedly and telling her to get the hell up. Still drowsy, she fumbled a little reaching for it, trying to find the right button to shut it off while keeping her face shoved against her pillow. With a soft click, the alarm ceased and she indulged in the pleasantry of the silence that followed. For a few minutes.

She rolled her head and stared straight ahead at the calendar on the wall, noting the day - the twenty-eighth. Rosh Hashanah. In her mind, she had already celebrated it three months earlier (it had been November before she was ported in, after all) so it had been jarring, to say the least, for it to come around so “soon”. The complexities of time travel, she supposed.

Another “new year”.

The bed creaked quietly as she sat up, grunting in the back of her throat. She looked at her shoulder, the skin still a faint purple no thanks to tackling a small gang last night and having herself practically hurdled against a large garbage can. At least she didn’t have work today and wouldn’t need full use of it until midnight again tonight.

She exhaled slowly, puncturing the silence once more with another grunt as she moved off the bed and headed into the bathroom. She had never really taken in the emptiness of her MAC apartment until now. No Bette to greet her when they came across each other, no sparring, none of her personal belongings or anything other than her uniform to remind her that there was, in a way, a piece of home still with her.

Her sleepy reflection glared back at her and when she looked closely at her own eyes, she told herself they weren’t just hers but Beth’s. Alice. No... her sister. The sister whom shared the same eyes as her and she didn’t realize it until it was too late. But he had known all along.

There it was again, the heavy feeling pressing against her chest, getting thicker and heavier with each breath she heaved. She can’t partake in the Tashlikh. It would be lying to herself and worst of all, forgiving herself for letting the one person she might have been able to save to drown in Gotham’s harbour. And she didn’t know why. Why any of this had happened or how it came to be. As long as she remained in this world, she would never be able to move forward.

She could have sworn her scar burned at the thought.
