Yes. Yes, the City was crawling with the undead not even a week ago. That wasn't an excuse to idle. Strength wasn't the issue for Zelgadis as he was then, but technique could always be refined. And the longer he went without casting his spells, the more liable he was to forget those Chaos and Power words; being a sorcerer of his world required constant study and repetition, and he was never reluctant to do that. He loved it, really. It made him feel strong, worthwhile, and independent. Even in a City rather bereft of magic - or, perhaps, moreso because of it. He was part of a fairly exclusive club in that sense.
Not to mention being in that super-exclusive club of having a rock hide, and that fact certainly hasn't been stressed enough, has it? No. Never.
In any case, the large, vacant lot bruised and abused by his magic was receiving frequent calls, alone or with company. It was a section of a residential area not quite residential anymore due to it being a rather hot spot for abuse.
Such as magic.
