[when Shockwave was bigger, he mentioned that it wasn't quite the best idea for Giselle to linger out alone - especially not as it was getting dark. she certainly hadn't forgotten that! why, a brave little stray dog had happily agreed to be her escort back from the store - she was as safe as safe could be!

with the plastic bag of treats swinging with her happy stride, she and her scruffy companion made their way through the park, on the way to the streets to hail one of those kind taxi driver men to take her back to the home where a young Shockwave and the whole menagerie was waiting for a pre-bedtime treat and a story. she would certainly not disappoint ( ... )

[At first, the song reminded him of a ghostly howl, but it faded into something simple and beautiful, something without ulterior motives. Without teeth. (The dog, of course, he was less sure about.)

He squinted ahead and lifted his hands from his head, as though it might help him hear better. He was still tight and tense like a stringed instrument tuned too tight, but he was also curious.]

[she emerged with her animal friend(s; there was a robin's nest in a tree nearby), twirling a step or two for no other reason than because she just loved to do that. her note tapered and then cut into an abrupt Hm? as the dog made a different noise, one of alert. someone nearby!

even with a mission to complete, Giselle was never too busy to meet a new friend or help a stranger. hadn't her tumble down the well proved that (and proved she had a slow learning curve when it came to people)?

well, in any case, one sight of the boy at the swing and Giselle was ready to make a bee line. she had to call out a hello first, of course, lest she startle or interrupt something she oughtn't.]

Hello, there! [she waved, smiling big enough to be seen from that distance.]

[Oh god, she saw him. His face grew hot with embarrassment and then he realized that he was crying, crying at the smile, crying because someone else had found him in his misery and now he had to explain it. God. He buried his face in his hands. He could already taste the tears in the back of his throat.]
