Sandust Bookstore, Sunday afternoon rossum_ceo April 19 2011, 00:56:13 UTC
Boyd normally wouldn't go shopping for a book himself, but today he felt a need to get away from the office and going book hunter provided him the perfect excuse. He needed the book anyway so it wasn't as if he was simply wasting time. What he hadn't been counting on was how difficult it would be to find the book he was searching for. It wasn't as if it was an unknown work, but he'd been up and down the entire philosophy section without managing to find it.

While he often did have a great deal of patience this particular endeavor was finally starting to aggravate Boyd and it showed. Finally he gave up and decided to call for a clerk. Even if the place did look deserted there had to be somebody on duty. "Excuse me is there anyone here?"

A large black dog had been watching Boyd with an air of bemused sympathy from his spot on a small throw rug. At Boyd's question, it gives a small wuff and gets up. Tail a-wag, the dog trots over and looks up at Boyd with friendly intelligence.

You called?

Boyd knelt down to give the dog a pet, still looking rather annoyed at his inability to find what he was looking for. "Now, where's your master? I need him to help me find a book."

The dog accepts the pats, but looks slightly glum - if Remus was here, he could have told Boyd that Padfoot could find any book in the store for him. Ah well. Maybe he should put up more signs...

In the here and now, Padfoot barks acknowledgement and trots off into the back room of the store. A few moments later a shaggy-haired young man comes out with an apologetic smile.

"Thought I heard someone out here, hullo. You must be simmering, if the dog came back after me."

Boyd stood back up and tried to smile. Finally some help. "Sorry, I've just been trying for a while now to find this one book, or a collection of the author's work without any luck. John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding do you have it?

"Uhh. Hang on, let me check the books." Moving quickly, he ducked behind the counter and opened a battered ledger, big enough that he propped it open against the edge of the upper counter ledge. Something (a pencil?) tapped against the inside page, and the young man frowned as he scanned down the page.

Boyd might also notice, now that he's still and distracted for a moment, that this young man is wearing an identical collar to the dog's.

Sirius, having cast a handy little locator-charm Remus had come up with during their school days, waited for the ledger to tell him if the book Boyd was looking for was in the store, and if so, where.

"Aha! Well, we've got a collector's edition from the turn of the century...the last one, not this one, obviously, if you're looking for a collector's item. Otherwise...there's an anthology of Empiricists with him, Berkeley and Hume."

Boyd noticed, but chose not to mention it. He did however file away that bit of information for later. Never knew when a small detail like that might be useful. "The collector's edition will be fine. Can you gift wrap it?"

Sirius's eyebrows go up. Hold on a second there, cowboy. "Them. Three volumes. Leather bound from a private library, $450 for the set. But yes, I can gift wrap them. Hell, I'll throw in a bouquet of flowers and I'd say you're all set to give some bibliophile the best night of her life."

"That sounds perfect," Boyd said as he pulled out a corporate credit card and handed it to Sirius. "And I'm sure the recipient will enjoy them. At least I hope she will."

Whiskey had been rather unpredictable recently so he couldn't be sure.

Well, Remus'd be happy. Probably. (He was a bit odd sometimes, when having to hand over his books.) Sirius, however, had to deal with the ledger and calculating tax and the credit card machine, and then wrapping the damned things, so it was a struggle not to become visibly grouchy. If only it were easier to tell when the person in front of you was an Import or a muggle, or he could've used magic for the wrapping. Alas, it wouldn't be the tidiest job, and Sirius ended up with a bit of tape stuck in his hair without realizing it, but it wasn't a complete disaster. While he worked, he gave Boyd a receipt to sign and a gift tag to fill out.

"She someone special, then?"

Sorry, RL ate up all my time. rossum_ceo April 23 2011, 18:36:55 UTC
"Very special," Boyd said as he leaned forward and signed the receipt. "I'm hoping this gift will remind her of that. Hopefully she'll believe me this time."
