/sneaks in here for... tryouts??? bedeviledspider April 13 2011, 14:10:26 UTC
Reilly was drinking a bottle of water when he walked in, clad in workout clothes, his costume most definitely "not" stashed away in the duffel bag he was carrying with him. Because he would never, ever go out on a little warm up patrol before tryouts.

Not that he was worried about how this would go. He already had the job, but it just... didn't seem right to not test himself for Selina and whoever else might be running the place now. Whoever they were. What if they'd found a better teacher for his kids? It wouldn't be - ugh, he hated to think it, but - responsible not to make sure they were getting the best education possible.

He was snapped out of his reverie the second he spotted Cass, jogging over to her with his usual dorky smile. Maybe she would know who he needed to see.

Cass stopped pulverizing a punching bag long enough to give Reilly a smile.

"Hi," she said, a little surprised to see him. His class wasn't for a few hours, and it was obvious that he'd been out on patrol, so a workout didn't seem too necessary. Unless he was adopting a Cass-esque workout routine. "Training?"

Reilly gave the poor punching bag a pitying glance, before turning back to Cass.

"Not quite," he said, looking a bit sheepish. "Although that might not be such a bad idea... I'm trying out, actually. Er, again." It sounded a lot stupider when he said it out loud.

She looked a little dumbfounded for a minute, which probably didn't help it seem any less stupid. "...Why?" He was already a teacher, after all.

It really didn't! "Well, I... was thinking. You know. A lot of people are trying out and they could be better fighters than me, and it would irresponsible to not let the kids get the best teacher they can and... it made sense in my head." Now, however, he was wishing the floor would just swallow him and put him out of his misery.

Well... it sort of made sense. Sort of.

"...Don't really need to," she said, absently dabbing her forehead with a towel. After all, she knew what he was capable of.

"Thanks, I think," he said, shaking his head and taking another gulp.

"Still -- I'm here. Might as well tangle with whoever I have to get this job. Again."

She paused for a few seconds before finally dropping the bomb.

"Um. That's me."

He let just as a long a silence, if more awkward, pass as that sunk in.

"...Oh. Congratulations."

She smiles incredibly awkwardly. "Thanks. Um. That's why we, uh... don't need to... um..." She made some hand signs that in Cass-speak meant 'fighting.'

"Don't need to--?" Reilly's eyebrows knitted in concentration as he tried mimicking Cass's hand movements. "...Oh. That. Yeah, I guess we... don't. Now."

He smiled back, trying to go for reassuring, but it was just awkward. "Unless you want to?"

This was getting really awkward. She hadn't considered the logistics of being her boyfriend's boss when accepting the job. Something had to be done to defuse this situation.

She paused for a few moments, before getting a sly smile. "Okay. Can be a teacher... if you can hit me." Okay, so maybe that only defused the situation in Cass's mind. But it wasn't like she was going to fire him if he couldn't.

Reilly chuckled, putting his bag and bottle to the side. "If I hit you, huh?"

The awkward was still there - so thick you could almost see it, in fact - but at least this was normal. For them, anyway. Fists raised, and smiling, he said. "All right. There's a first time for everything."
