HAHA I read that a few times like "heyyy :<" deadredbird December 26 2010, 04:11:45 UTC
Reaching out for it, he examines the necklace seriously in what light there is, passing his thumb over the charm. He recognizes it for what it is, though he's not sure Carrie is implying anything too deep here. Though Jason's never been the kind of guy to wear a necklace, he doesn't feel opposed to it. It's more like it was never an issue. First he was a street kid, then he was Robin, and then he was dead. All the parts of his life are so neatly segmented and so close together, sometimes he still doesn't know how he figured out who he is. Or if he has.

It doesn't especially feel that way right now, when he's cupping the necklace in his hand and looking at Carrie. It wouldn't be totally weird to hug her at this point, but it would also be just as normal not to. ... Fuck it. Jason stoops swiftly and hugs Carrie to him. It has the suddenness of an attack, but he's reasonably sure he can absorb any counterattack she might automatically attempt.

Hugs probably shouldn't feel like grim despair, but that's just his overall mood coloring the moment. Carrie feels much as she did when he carried her before, impossibly small through the thick layers of both their coats.

surprise, carrie actually doesn't like him at all!! girlyboywonder December 26 2010, 04:41:18 UTC
She freezes for half a second, but only for surprise. Jason had never exactly struck Carrie as the type to give out hugs, after all. But then that half of a second is up and she's raising both arms to wrap tightly around him. It never crosses her mind to read the speed and suddenness of it as violence -- her trust is absolute.

Jason's warm, even through the coat. She'd noticed it the first time, too. He's warm, he's reassuring, and suddenly showing up at this party where she knows barely half the people without really knowing any of them is worth it.

"You're not coming in, huh." It's a statement more than a question. She turns her head to rest it against his chest so it won't come out too muffled, unwilling as she is to give up the hug quite yet.

He's forced to think about the last time he hugged anybody, but nothing's coming to mind. Surely Danny forced one on him at some point? Or maybe they never quite progressed past punching each other in the shoulder. (A flash of memory in which Danny's carrying him, after they took him off the wall... no, that doesn't count.) In any case, this is good, despite the inner turmoil. This isn't goodbye, there's no need to get all fucking dramatic, but all the same, Jason figures this won't be happening that often.

"Yeah." He confirms, and his voice isn't a deep bass but one can feel it in his chest anyway. "I need to talk to Bruce." For some reason he can't remember if they've ever had a conversation in which either of them said 'Bruce' at all, but it feels like they haven't.

She hadn't expected any other kind of answer. It's not Jason's kind of place, and -- she's starting to see -- not his kind of crowd. So she's not disappointed, not really. That's just Jason.

"Okay." She finally drops her arms and pulls away, offering a warm smile up. "Welcome back. And merry Christmas, for the record." She half-wonders if she should teasingly mention South America (the timing feels off), or ask what he needs Bruce for (even worse idea, something about privacy and respect), but settles on leaving it at that. It's Christmas. Everything else can wait.
