The sound of Fakir's voice, strong and clear despite its softness, just made Duck feel worse.

She knew, now that the heat of the moment had long since passed, that bringing Fakir's honor as a knight into question had been hurtful. And she'd tried to make up for it in small, wordless ways: she'd made cupcakes, put her extra blanket on his bed, gotten a nice new bar of soap that didn't smell too girly and left it on his side of the sink. But he'd been avoiding her and her gestures with his usual stubbornness.

And once again, Princess Tutu was more or less helpless to fix the problem.

Now, clutching the lamp that had once held the feeling of affection from Mytho's splintered heart, she hesitated outside Fakir's door, trying to pull together enough courage to confront him.

Once the song wound down, Fakir's attention wandered once more, and he found himself glancing at the half-open door to his bedroom. Well. He hadn't expected her to actually approach him.

"Are you just going to eavesdrop out there?"

"N--no! No, I was just--I mean, I wanted--"

With an enormous effort, she managed to rein in her sputtering.

"Do you... have a minute?"

"I have several," Fakir said curtly as he went to flop onto the unmade bed on one side of the room.

"I, um..."

She fidgeted, hugging the lamp a little tighter. (The funny thing about it, she'd noticed--even as far back as Gold Crown Town--was that it was always warm, but never warm enough to burn.)

"I just... I wanted... to talk about the other day."

Fakir snorted and put his hands behind is head, glowering up at the ceiling.

"I think you said all you really wanted to, so don't bother."

"But--" She stopped, shaking her head. Her entire face felt hot, right to the roots of her hair.

"I didn't... Fakir, I'm really sorry."

A long moment passed in silence before Fakir side and glanced over at her. Somewhere in the rational part of his mind he knew that he was being childish, but...

"I trusted you with a lot of things about myself nobody else really knows," he said, very quietly.

"...I know."

She looked down at the lamp, suddenly wishing it could shrink her down so she could crawl into a crack in the floor and disappear.

"I was just... Rue's trusted me too, and I was so angry about what happened to her I wasn't thinking."

Fakir didn't see the point in asking why she was angrier over Rue's treatment than she was considerate of him; he was more than accustomed to that.

"Just what did happen?" he asked instead. Mytho had seemed very upset about the whole thing, and he had forced himself to not pry.

"He... he said he didn't want to be around her. And that she wasn't trying to fight the monster inside her." She paused, and then ventured a glance up at him. "You two are a lot alike, you know. You're both always doing things by yourselves. Except that, well... you have Mr. Ben and Mytho and Valiant, and Rue's still alone."

Fakir fixed her with a cold look, his frown deepening. It wasn't being compared to Rue that irritated him, no, not at all.

"Doesn't want to be around her?" he asked, quirking an eyebrow. That was... unusually straightforward of him. "He isn't usually so blunt about such things."

Duck nodded once, fidgeting with the lamp. "And by the time you came along--honestly, I thought she was going to cry. Right there, in front of everybody. If it had been you in that situation, I would have yelled at anybody who looked like they were making it worse."

She hesitated before averting her eyes and adding, "I really do care about you both."

"I understand that you do, but that doesn't change the fact that, even if I couldn't have known what was going on, the first thing to leap out of your overactive mouth was the worst possible thing."

"I didn't mean for it to be!" Her eyes were beginning to smart, but she swallowed back the tears as bravely as she knew how. "It was wrong, I know that. And I should have stopped and thought before I said something... I guess I really am an idiot."

One last look at her convinced Fakir to stop tormenting her. He gave a ragged sigh and sat up, throwing his legs over the side of his bed.

"Look," he said. "I know you're an idiot. Everyone close to me is an idiot. I should get used to that. But I stick by what I said, even if I forgive you for how you reacted."
