Rachel had felt the death, the fear, the pain... it was depressingly familiar and jolted her out of her reverie. Sending a telepathic message to her teammates and friends to let them know what had happened and where she was going she headed out, intending to save as many of the survivors as she could.

Wrapping herself in her power, she headed into the still-burning ruins, following the helpless and scared minds of those trapped inside, gently touching them and letting them know they weren't alone, that someone was on the way, that they wouldn't be forgotten.

She had received Ms. Grey's message, and she had, eventually followed. The fact that all of it--the fire, the smoke, the screaming--reminded Dust of the bus explosion was only more reason to be there. She had to make sure that nobody else died today.

Sooraya was harder to reach telepathically once she went into her sand form, but she was much more flexible. As millions of silicate particles, she could reach places no normal human could--and breathing toxic fumes, thankfully, was also not an issue. What she was having problems with were the terrified survivors, horrified at the sight of what they could only assume was more rubble and sand collapsing on top of them. Right now she was with a man and a woman, trapped underneath a practical tent of blasted concrete. The man's leg was broken, and neither had not taken the sight of half a girl's face reforming in front of them particularly well ( ... )

Rachel felt the spike of fear and panic and diverted her attention to look through the eyes of the frightened people. Seeing Dust, she quickly put the situation together and using the people as a beacon and headed to their location.

"Dust? I'm going to need you a little more solid."

She moved close to the people and smiled, "Don't mind her, she falls to pieces at the slightest thing. I'm going to look at this rubble and figure out how best to move it okay?" She projected a small amount of calm on them so they wouldn't protest too much.

Looking back at her teammate, she waved her over. "Take shallow breaths, keep your head down, I need you to see if there's any rebar or concrete stabbing them."

The City's mostly-NPC finest are also present and active at the grisly scene, doing crowd control at the perimeter, helping bring the wounded to ambulances, and rescuing people from the wreckage. Basic motley cop... stuff.

CROWD CONTROL (also all of this is open) frobocop November 24 2010, 07:14:49 UTC
Get back. I repeat, stand back right now.

[Atsuko herself is busy yelling at bereaved people and rubberneckers to go away, which is pretty much her dream job. All the frustration and fear and rage of the last few days have started to come to a head, and because of that she's shouting way louder than she needs to. Into a bullhorn. She wants to be out there in the middle of it, but she doesn't. She knows her powers are useless, so she'd get in the way, and she just--doesn't want to see any more dead people. Not that that would actually keep her away if she wasn't dead weight, but shit, she can halfway smell them anyway.

One of the civilians throws a rock, or a piece of rubble, or something, screaming some words she can't even identify--and she's able to get her whip to curl around it and snap it to the ground before it can smash into one of the delightful NPC cops. At least her powers are good for something.]

[Just because Sally was here on behalf of Norman's Avengers didn't mean she had to ignore the other groups helping out. And, considering she had been a part of the force long before she had been a part of that team, she figured offering a hand in crowd control wouldn't be beyond her.

Though of course, decked in that fancy revealing yellow costume of hers, she wasn't exactly made for crowd control. She had spent some time helping out the injured, getting them to ambulances or even imPorted healers, avoiding the already dead mostly for the sake of her sanity. She was numb, felt numb, and this whole mess was just a fog to her.

But she wanted to do something right, as though to make up for the lacking of being able to do something for her kid.]

Need any help?

Aaron could hear Atsuko from his place near the building, dodging through debris, paying little mind to the fact that the fire singed his skin as he picked up both living and dead and tried to carefully move them to a staging area where they could receive care without the danger of responders being injured by fires and debris. It was slow, painful work as he had to be careful not to hurt anyone further while he traced his way out toward the paramedics.

"Medic!" He hacked as he got a lungful of acrid smoke that temporarily blinded him, making navigation impossible, except by sound and stumbling. The body in his arms didn't even react. It was all a horrible nightmare that brought back many bad memories. That, and dear god, Laurie was somewhere in all this.

He shouldn't be here. Logic dictated that he should not be there. The chemicals burned his lungs and his eyes teared up underneath his mask. But the pain was good. The choking, smothering sensation of the air. The smell of rotting flesh. All of it was good. He needed it. It was good. Kept him focused. The same technique he used when scared worked here, using the unpleasantness of the situation to generate clarity. Help him locate people ( ... )

The news came on in a flash that morning while Luke was making eggs. Danny got his mask on and ran out to run head first into the fray. Luke told Nill to sit still as he dropped everything and followed him--no special costumes, no second thoughts, just a boy running after his brother, and making sure he didn't do anything stupid ( ... )

Danny paused, looking back. Unlike Luke, he hadn't thought to bring a cloth forcing him to use a makeshift one to cover his mouth, torn from the sleeve of his uniform. He looked at Luke expectantly though his impatience was plain as day. A burning rafter shifted beside him, forcing him to the shift to the side. An annoyed look crossed his face as he looked back at Luke.

"Not really the best time to talk, Luke." His shout was muffled and faint over the crackling flames.

Danny's lack of care was bordering on ridiculous. He knew he had the power of Kumbaya and meditation helped him heal, but he couldn't very well heal if he had third degree burns all over his body. Luke threw shit aside causing spurts of fire and sparks and just walked right through it all.

"You know what? I think it is." He was a few feet away from Danny now and the place was hotter than an oven. "You ain't got skin like me, Danny. You're gonna get hurt in here. What's wrong with you?"

[The moment Diana hears the news, she is on the scene in seconds. There is a beat as she surveys the situation -- corpses scattered around the block, mangled bodies choking out their last breaths -- before she heads directly into the heart of the explosion. She needs to stop the fire before it escalates even further.]

[ He's lucky he catches the news before he heads off for work. He calls to Ted to call in sick for him before he's putting on his uniform and flying out to the gruesome scene. It's the worst he's seen in months, being cooped up in his pretend fun life with Blue. He covers his mouth as he flies over the scene. Then he sees a flash of red, blue, and gold--Wonder Woman--and flies down to help her. ]

Michael! [Diana pulls out a few bodies from the rubble. The chemicals and fumes aren't affecting her, but she knows that it wouldn't be the same for everyone.] Find a decontamination suit then come back.

No need! [ Without touching anything, Booster is now surrounded by a golden glow. He joins Diana and aids her in handling the bodies. Booster makes a face at the charred remains of what looked like a factory work. ] Jeez, how did this happen?

The sheer stench coming from that area was nearly enough to burn his nose out as he came nearer, but it was also what drew him closer. He knew the stink of burning bodies and chemicals as well as any number of things, though it hadn't seemed so harsh before--but then, nothing really did, when one was locked away in the cockpit of a mobile suit, breathing recycled air. It wasn't until a person stepped back outside into the real world that everything hit all at once ( ... )

Blue bars and graphs ticked and flowed in the corner of Jaime's eye as he flew in on the scene. The sight of people rallying to help their fellow man was great and inspiring and all, but...that was a lot of chemical damage, and not everyone down there was prepped for a little hazmat. Not like the guy in the do-it-all armor, at least. And though he was hardly as trained to tend to victims of the severity he saw, there was enough to imitate among professionals and vigilantes alike. It was definitely a learn-as-you-go situation.

The Blue Beetle slowed up over a patch of paramedics, giving a wave-salute and shouting his intentions before going ahead to get to work. Details weren't lost on him with the Scarab as the constant backup, and a chirp of alert drew Jaime's eyes to a side to find a familiar energy signature in a fairly unfamiliar shape. It wasn't a good time to chat, though, and especially...Oh, crap!"Above you!" he shouted, making his presence known as his arms reconfigured into a merged, tubular shape. It fired a hissing, ( ... )

He paused in the digging at the sound of Jaime's voice just in time to take a few awkward steps back to the side and away from both the shot fired and the stuff it was busy diverting, making a surprised whurf sound. The ground underneath him was getting almost too hot despite the benefit of thick, rough pads on the bottom of his feet in that body instead of exposed human skin.

How much longer did she have, really?

Finding himself wishing for the first time that he had the middle-ground body available to him, as it was capable of some speech, and unwilling to let the two on his back hit the ground by shifting to the only form he did have that was, Trowa tried to track Jaime through smoke and watery eyes. Catching a glimpse of blue, he gave a loud rumble in the hopes of gaining his friend's attention, and turned his head to look at the bodies draped over himself.

If Jaime could just get them out of there...

Jaime landed on the end opposite Trowa, crouching down as his arms split apart again to give him fingers. He couldn't just lift the slab of concrete pinning the woman down without risking crushing her upper body, so it was up to something a little more time-consuming. His index fingers elongated to points, sparking and carefully slicing through the slab like a surgeon's scalpel, snatching the piece closest to the woman's face and lifting it away, then the other, slipping his arm under her knees and slowly lifting them up. He winced out a Sorry! when she gave a noise - he really was, but she had to get out of there in one piece ( ... )
