Cass darted across the rooftops with reckless abandon. Two thoughts rushed through her mind over and over again: Reilly was hurt, and she would kill the Joker. It didn't matter if he could nullify powers; hers weren't useful anyway. And even if she couldn't read his body language, all she had to do was hit him and keep hitting him, until he couldn't do something like this again.

She finally reached the warehouse and kicked the door open and rushed inside without even pauses to check for traps or enemies. The warehouse was obscured by smoke and flames. She could vaguely make out the bodies lined up against the back wall. And then she heard the pained mumbling. Reilly's mumbling. She rushed through the flames to his side, briefly assessing his wounds. She'd never really seen anything like them, and briefly wondered what kind of monstrous thing the Joker had done to cause them. Lifting him as gently as possible into her arms, she ran toward the exit, zigzagging between burning structural pieces. She coughed slightly as she ( ... )

May hadn't been on the ideal side of town when the message came out, but at least she'd already been in costume. She'd started sprinting and catching a cling on subways as quickly as possible to get there. All those people...Reilly...she was torn between hoping the fanboy got there before she did to help and hoping he was somehow delayed and couldn't get himself hurt to boot.

As she approached the building her Spider Sense was, understandably, going crazy. Fire had that effect. She concentrated though, trying to find the source of the small buzz that was Reilly's superhuman signature-

There. Her brow furrowed for a moment as she raced towards it and realized he was outside but there was a second...

Of course. His girlfriend had gotten there first. She let out a sigh of relief as she landed near by. She would just check quickly, get it off her mind, then throw herself in to pull out anyone else who may still be inside.

"Is he...?

Reilly greeted the girls with a weak cough.

His eyes darted around the scene, trying to put the picture together, but all he could see were tear-filled eyes. Cass. He raised a scarred hand to her face, trying to wipe the tears away.

Until he heard May's voice and instinctively struggled to sit up, only to fail and collapse against Cass. "May?" His voice was hoarse, relieved, and frightened. "Why-- it's dangerous, you idiot, go home."

Cass's lips trembled slightly, finally forming a weak smile at his reaction. She clutched his hand and lowered it back down, squeezing it gently as if to say worry about yourself, not me.

"Iron Fist is coming. He'll be... okay," she said to May, her voice wavering slightly. She knew that she should be back in the blazing warehouse, pulling the rest of the injured from danger. But she couldn't seem to get her fingers to let go of Reilly's hand. Everyone she cared about seemed to get hurt, or worse. She had to make sure that Reilly was safe.

"Don't you ever shut up?"

The relief in her voice was overwhelming, and May took what felt like her first real breath since the post had gone across the network as he moved. Still, she did have some sense. Cass was another mask, and the Iron Fist would know what to do far better than she did. The people still in that warehouse needed her way more than Reilly possibly could.

Not to mention, well...she'd had enough romantic moments ruined by nosy capes to recognize when she was stepping in on one herself. She took a step back, nodding to the pair of them.

"The real idiot's probably just getting his webs in the flames. One of us better be there to lecture him, or he'll start getting ideas. You..."

She gestured at Cass with both hands. Watch out for him..

Reilly replied to May's smart remark the only way he could in this state: a painful, labored rolling of his eyes. He'd chew her out later. Wouldn't want to give a lackluster lecture on reckless heroism, after all, he had a reputation to maintain.

For now she'd have to settle for a weary but - proud? - smile. Had to be a trick of the light, of course.

His eyes stayed on her until May disappeared into the flames. Then he looked up at Cass and squeezed her hand. I'm sorry I wasn't strong enough to save you from this.

Wait a moment. Oh, god. "Misty," he choked out in a horrified whisper. "You said Iron Fist was-- does he know?"

Cass just smiled weakly at first. That Reilly, blaming himself when it was her who should feel bad about not being there for him.

When he mentioned Iron Fist, her expression changed to confusion, and then to shock as she read his body language. Misty--someone close to Danny--had been inside... and hadn't been as fortunate as Reilly. "I-I don't know," she stammered, feeling a twinge of guilt that she hadn't picked up on Danny's own concerns when she'd contacted him earlier.

Reilly was no expert at reading body language -- far from it, in fact -- but it wasn't difficult to deduce Cass's expression. He squeezed a little harder. "We'll tell him, if we have to, but it's like you said. It's going to be okay."

That may have sounded reassuring underneath the weariness and pain in his voice. He wasn't sure. He certainly didn't believe it, but he could be an amazing liar when he wanted to be.

"I, um." He chuckled, forcing a genuine smile despite how much hurt. "This probably isn't the time, but-- I'm glad it was you who found me."

She wasn't as sure. Just harming Reilly had made her want to kill the Joker several times over. She couldn't imagine what Danny must be feeling. But she nodded anyway, trying to remain optimistic for Reilly's sake.

"I'm glad, too," she whispered, a tear trickling down her cheek as she carefully hugged him closer.

He stared at the small splash on his chest. A guilty look spread over his face. It was so easy to spout off supportive sentiments when he was here. Alive and with the person he... cared for.

As best he could, he hugged her back, hoping she'd understand everything he couldn't say.
