Trowa knew much better than to go for a run in the middle of the afternoon. For one thing, it was damned hot out with the sun just overhead like that, and in any case it was a terribly stupid risk to wear the shape of a prehistoric beast the size of a pickup truck and go tearing through the City in broad daylight. He liked danger, and took a hell of a lot of chances where his safety was involved--to be expected after the kind of life he'd lived up until now--but even the adrenaline junkie in him could recognize when something was just an all-around bad idea ( ... )

The sound of his name being called out like that made him flinch--although whether it was due to a breach in security or because he thought it would bring more loonies out of the woodwork was up in the air--and he turned his head to see Bakura coming his way.

Trowa was already getting tired of surprise interactions with other people. For a moment, he thought of making an escape. Perhaps if he leaped onto the nearby newspaper vending-box, bounded off and grabbed the street-light, then used it as a swing-bar up to the apartment balcony not too far away...

But he reminded himself that it was Bakura, who was kind-hearted and amiable, and probably not at all the sort to make a nuisance of himself. In any case, his friend had gone out of his way to make him comfortable in his new role as normal teenager. He could at least try to repay it by being sociable for a few minutes.

Trowa stood still, waiting, only giving a slow raise of one hand to signify that he'd heard.

"It's fine," he replied, dismissing the apology even though he was still a little ticked off about the incident. He didn't want to set the other off on a binge of stammering embarrassment, well aware that he didn't have the social skills to calm Bakura back down after.

Staying in one place gave him the uneasy feeling that people were watching him again, and he slowly took a few steps forward to try and urge his friend into walking with him. "They're all right. You had Matsuka worried."

No need to talk about Soundwave. That would require thinking about him. And that...

Trowa stared up at the clouds to try and blink something back.

He would have been grateful for that if he'd known, not particularly wishing to be launched into the need to explain himself.

"I offered to track you," he muttered, not too loudly--one never knew who was listening in. Anti-imPort zealots were very good at spotting those they disliked. "They told me not to worry."

And so he hadn't. Not too much. Orders were orders.

"Yeah," he replied, if a little awkwardly. "No problem."

This sort of touchy-feely emotional thing was totally not something he could do face to face. Over the comms, maybe. To people who were close enough to know how to read into his poor attempts. Here, in public, to someone he was still struggling to get to know?

Not so much.

Trowa opened his mouth to try to say something a little more intelligent, but failed. Oh well. The walk's nice.

He was not oblivious to the glances, and wondered if there was something on his face that warranted the repeated looks in his direction. It didn't feel like that was the case--and Bakura had seen his hair enough times by then that he ought to have been long past surprise at it.

"Mm. I have to work for a while," he mused. "Then drop by the docks. Not after that."

Fortunately for Bakura, he hadn't made all the necessary mental connections just yet about the problem he was having. It seemed like a reasonable request on his friend's part--after what had happened to everyone he knew recently, he was certain he didn't want to regret that kind of loss either.

"All right."
