Calvin was bored, so he decided to build a spaceship and go to Jupiter.
This made perfect sense, really. The minds of young children are particularly susceptible to having themselves inflamed by sudden enthusiasms, and Misfit's post had re-sparked his passion for space. I've visited Mars back home and the Moon here, but that's no excuse for not exploring any more! He'd thought. It's a big universe out there, and there's still a lot of it to explore. And if people are gonna treat going to the Moon like it's a regular thing then I'll just have to make sure I top everybody! Let's see 'em beat Jupiter! And from there it was just a matter of assembling the correct materials, finding a pair of suitable goggles, and drawing a map for getting through the asteroid belt.
Calvin was now sitting in the park surrounded by what adults would call 'junk' and what kids called 'stuff you needed to have fun.' He was wearing his goggles and space cape ( one of his Stupendous Man capes with a star drawn on it) consulting his crayon blueprints as he tried to fit his ship together. Sure, he and Hobbes had been able to get to Mars in the wagon, but this was Jupiter. It was way bigger and further away. Something more elaborate was needed.
Clearly the answer was cardboard. Lots of cardboard. Calvin was trying to stack at least half a dozen boxes on top of each other to form a fuselage. This is gonna be the best spaceship ever!
