[The sound of a communicator being fiddled with, buttons being prodded, that sort of thing]

Golly, you'd think that something like this would come with instructions!

Uhm... am I doing it right?

Yes? Okay, I think I have it!

So, hello everybody who's listening? My name is Mary Marvel, and I'm a new arrival to this city. Boy, it sure is an interesting ( Read more... )

Yes, everybody ends up confused and baffled when they first end up here, fret not.

...Did you really just say "golly?"

Haha, yeah, I guess it's to be expected! I mean, my coming here was so... sudden! If I had a bit of time to prepare, maybe I'd be less confused, but it'd also be less of an adventure, right?

.... What's wrong with "golly"? Why does everyone always ask that?

Ah, a glass half full sort of person, are we? I can see you're going to get on famously here.

Well, it never helps to sit and sulk!

And I don't really understand why anyone would look at a glass and say it's "half empty"; I mean, it's not like it's *all* empty! And even then, you just get up and pour yourself more... uhm... whatever was in the glass!

I'm glad to have you as a friend! What's your name?

...Arnold J. Rimmer, SSc, BSc, at your service, ma'am. Mary Marvel, right?

Haha, right! I guess I announced that to everyone, didn't I? It is very nice to make your acquaintance, Mr. Rimmer, sir!

I don't mean to be rude, but do you have super-powers? It seems like a lot of people around here do.

This is either adorable or pathetic, I can't decide which yet.

Pleasure is mine, Miss Marvel. And, yes, I do. I'm a hard-light hologram, and as such I am invulnerable. How about you?

Go with adorable because she IS adorable. :D littleprovolone April 18 2009, 03:05:20 UTC
Well, let's see! Gosh, I have so many, haha! I call upon the powers of seven gods, and when I do I have increased speed, stamina, wisdom, strength, power, and courage. I'm pretty much invulnerable, but it depends on who I'm fighting. Oh, and I can fly!

Wow, it sounds kind of vain when I say it all out like that, doesn't it?

I'm not sure what a hard-light hologram is, Mr. Rimmer. Would you explain it to me? And please, call me Mary! Everyone does.

Rimmer does not believe in adorable. Adorable makes him vomit. ajrimmer_ssc April 18 2009, 03:12:09 UTC
It does sound a little bit vain, yes, but then again, be proud of what you can do, Mary.

As for what a hard-light hologram is, well, that's a bit technical and complicated. How familiar are you with holograms in general?

Mary is the exception to the rule. She is too earnest and damnably SINCERE! littleprovolone April 18 2009, 03:16:56 UTC
Golly, I don't know about being proud, I'm just happy that I can help people around me!

Hmm... well, I know that they're projected light, and usually 3-D images, and because they're just light, you can't hurt them. Villains use them sometimes to make escapes and to keep us distracted, and I think Mr. Guy uses some sort of hologram... thingy with his Green Lantern powers, but I'm not sure, especially because he can interact with stuff with his green light. ... Does that help?

I don't know this Guy of yours, but that sounds approximately right, yes. Now, imagine that light that makes up the hologram is solid. You can touch it. Hence the name hard-light hologram. Tah dah.

Oh, wow, that makes sense! Where are you projecting from, then, Mr. Rimmer?

Ah, now that would be telling, wouldn't it? You'll soon learn, m'dear, that you can't just announce everything all over the place on this comm. There are subversive and psychotic elements lurking about, and telling everybody your nature is just not an A-1 primo idea.

Yes. Yes he does. littleprovolone April 18 2009, 03:32:10 UTC
Oh! Wow, I guess I do have a lot to learn about this place. So just anyone can look in and read this stuff? That seems an awful lot like snooping. I would never do such a thing!

If you look on your comm device, you'll see that there's a way to make things private, to make a voice post (like you already did), and video posts. All manner of options.

See, here's a private message just for you.

Like this? Oh, gosh, this is just too much fun! I never really had anything like this when I was in the Superbuddies! We had to use payphones or our cellphones to call the office if we were off on a mission!
