They took down that thing without a personal support system. They don't need families, or school, or what the hell ever, they've got each other. That's what you just proved, don't use it as something it's not. Those 'kids' know what they're doing.

[ Yeah, for the record Roxanne, he doesn't count himself as one of the kids here. He trusts you don't, either. ]

...Whatever. At least you got my good side.

And ultimately, I'd like them empowered enough to make that decision before the state, if necessary.

[So calm yo tits, as it were.]

[ No. ]

You just pointed them out to the state.

CPS already has all of them on record. I checked. They are all known quantities to the state, and there are CPS agents assigned to all of them, trying to get in touch with them or establish alternatives for them for guardianship. In fact, I was asked if I had current addresses for all of them. Thankfully, I don't - so I didn't have to lie to CPS.

[She'll cut you with the pen of truth.]

No, what you got is access to all of them. They don't need that, they're doing fine. Tell that to CPS. They're ImPorts. The State can't touch them.

[ He has no idea if that's right, but that's his story and he's sticking to it. And Roxy, you're a reporter, so you should know - you never let the truth spoil a good story. ]

And the federal right to not surrender information about a source.

And they're minors. The state can and will intervene, and it's all detailed in the PDF.

[Challenge her ethics one more time and you're going to get reamed, Julian. She's got that asskicking gleam in those pretty blue eyes. Story over facts? Not in Roxanne's code of ethics.]

They aren't even from this world. What right has anyone got to take them away?

The fact that tax payers from this world cover their prisons, medical, educational and other needs.

The import community is not entirely self-sufficient.

And you're the one who said they weren't all going to school. Do you want the state to take more notice of them? Because you don't even know if they want that. I wouldn't.

The

State.

Already.

Has.

Them.

On.

File.

They know who is in school at the institute, and who is not. They are aware who has guardians on file, and who does not. They were quite forthcoming with the information they could legally share with me. How can I make this more clear to you? They are already persons of interest. I could do an entire expose and they would not change the state's intentions toward them or that they are already subject to the state's attention.

Do I need to put it in semaphore, maybe? Skywriting? Perhaps interpretive dance?

I have not given the state anything they did not, in fact, already have.

[ She’s boring him now. ]

You know what? Whatever. No one was broadcasting it live on TV before you. Anything changes for them now, it’s on your head. Put that in your interpretive dance.

[ He rolls his eyes and throws the comm down. ]

Streaming it on the internet, but thanks for paying attention... which you haven't done.

At all.

Much as I hate to agree with Keller on something, he does have a point you really aren't getting. Having them on file is one thing, but when you point a big glowing sign at them alongside a report about what a shitty job CPS is doing on the matter, you really aren't doing anyone any favors.

If the kid were lucky, maybe CPS had gotten bored with trying to force him one way or the other. Now that you've aired their dirty laundry in public, how did you expect them to respond to this? Did you even think that far ahead?

I hope they respond by looking at the issues in their system and rectifying them. Just like I hope that the imPort community will step up and claim their own in the mean time.

It's that terrible problem of mine, generally believing that people are basically good< and will ultimately do what is right.

And you wonder why I call you naive. No, at this point the best they'll do is damage control, try to cover their own asses. They're not nearly as likely to try actually solving the problem as wanting to make it go away.
