[When the feed turns on, Leia's sitting up straight, hands folded on her lap, legs tucked together, chin up, and dressed neatly in an Earthy ensemble that looks a little out of the late 70s with its high collar and plain fit. I apologize for my late introduction, but I am Senator Leia Organa of the planet Alderaan and ambassador to the Imperial ( Read more... )

Ma'am, I could help you find a number of books.

I also know where most of the public libraries in Manhattan are.

[Smiling brightly at her response.]

Manhattan is the system we're in?

Manhattan is the island we're on--the central portion of the City. With several million inhabitants, it has a lot of sources of information.

If by system you mean "planetary system," that would be the system of Sol.

[in a little bit, sends her a text file with a list of libraries in the area--which is fairly complete--and an offer to show her how to use the catalog system]

[Leia smiles gratefully as she glances over the text file briefly.]

The Sol system. How many planets reside in this system?

[in return she gets a man in a labcoat with a giant screw in his head, slouched in a computer chair and smoking a cigarette. you never know what kind of person you'll end up talking to in this darn City.]

You can find a lot of that stuff online though you have to be careful about the legitimacy of the source you're reading.

History and language will probably be easier to get a grasp on if you visit a library.

[She recognizes death sticks easily enough but the screw in his head is quite unusual. She nods efficiently at him.]

I'm more concerned with history, as there seem to only be a few idioms I'm missing. I'll need to find a map of the city.

Oh. I can send you directions to the library I use, it has some good material.

[and here's the attachment "directions.docx", ready for download. said directions are from the MAC, which is a recognizable landmark even for those who don't live there anymore.]

Accounts of ancient history aren't as extensive here as they are in my home dimension, but I guess most people aren't concerned with that kind of thing.

[he speaks with a kind of dull monotone, but there is at least a little inflection there. Just enough to inject a little personality into his speech.]

You're from a different universe as well. [She takes some small relief from that as she glances through the directions. They should be easy enough to manage.]

Public library is your best bet. It'll have books about everything, and you can check them out for free.

And nothing is required to check them out for free.

You have to get a library card.

[Okay, confusion is now in place. Now it sounds like a mission.]

I can acquire the codes if necessary to get such a card.

Welcome to the planet, I'd say. Why do you need such extensive information, Miss Leia?

I've never been to the system and from what I've gathered from previous conversations, very far from home. [A formal smile.]

A real alien ambassador... I take it you're more of a research first, experiment later type. That's to be admired.

It's usually better to do some homework instead of blowing in half-cocked.

I could have offered my assistance.

You imply that you will no longer be offering that assistance.

It would be very appreciated, Mr. Eames. [Even more formal than before.]
