Could anybody? If they weren't somehow completely pure-hearted in the first place. Nobody like that exists...well, except maybe Yuugi. But most of us, I'd pretty much say almost every human being, has even a little shred of darkness inside them. That's what it feeds off of. Everyone's corrupt, even me.

There's... different kinds of darkness, isn't there? Some are easy to push aside, and others stay. Even if the worse feelings linger, it's not impossible to let them go, is it? No matter how dark they are, or how long they've clung to your heart, it's always possible. I'm sure even Yuugi had feelings like that.
