First Inquiry [voice]

[There's a rattling noise as the comm shakes with his hands.]

I don't know where I am, I don't know if anyone will even hear this, but I had to tell someone.
My name is Vic Sage, and...I can breathe again.

[A deep breath] For the first time in over a year, I can breathe again.

[There's a long pause, nearly thirty seconds, as he tries to collect ( Read more... )

[Bab basically takes a technological stamp and stamps it all over their conversation, as she is wont. This reply comes with a text containing the designated Oracle's Allies encryption code with instructions on how to use it. Beware, there are still entities capable of hacking it cough Major Kusanagi cough but for the most part it's pretty good.]

You'll find quite a few who do. Fortunately. Unfortunately? Well. That debate rages on.

Welcome to Not New York, where the Porter brings slews of people from other universes here for its own mysterious purposes. It's a pesky sort of AI, the kind that has thus far kept the most expert of experts and the techiest of technopaths out of its programming, and it rarely reveals anything of use. It's also been very quiet for a while.

The end result is a city full of metahumans, aliens, and robots. Technically, we're all metahumans now, as the Porter "gifts" us with superpowers that vary widely in terms of usefulness. I believe Batgirl makes a very nice cup of jasmine tea if she thinks about it.

Politics have been rudimentary but interesting. One of us, an "Import" known as Mitchell Hundred, was recently elected Mayor of the City.

There have been quite a few skirmishes, large as well as small, and you've arrived during a period of weirdness involving... well, we're not really sure, other than talking water.

Also, I — can guess at the date when you're from, but you just missed Christmas here. It's 2011. I don't know of anybody particularly close to you here other than Shiva. ... ah, a warning about the Helena you may run into here: she's remarkably similar in personality, temperament, and even appearance to ours, but she's actually a different person altogether.

[Fiddles a bit, figures this out. Huh, that wasn't too hard. also just to note this would've been last Monday, before most of the weirdness]

I'm not sure, I've never had the impression I was too well known in the cape circles. Obviously your people know me, or would that be his people? Both, I suppose.

That doesn't sound too different from home, only perhaps a little a little more focused. You still know everything that needs to be known, I see. Did that take long, or does it just come naturally?

That's...a little over five years. Huh. May have been at least that long since I last saw Shiva.

[Isn't even touching the Helena bit.]

I was really thinking more of Ted and Booster.

In a way, it isn't different at all. It's just that this has been going on for over two years now.

Oh, I don't know nearly enough yet. Perhaps you could help with that.

I'd be glad to. Asking questions is what I do, though I might be a little worried about something you can't figure out.

[He's quiet for a moment.]

...But Ted's dead.

[The catch in her quick intake of breath is juuust barely audible, since her hand is over her mouth.]

I'm so sorry. I've been here too long. It's not that I forgot Ted died, but rather that I got used to him being alive again. The Porter — it can do that. It can bring people here who were dead, either by bringing them from before their death, or — actually. [If she sounds troubled, well, it's a troubling subject.] Bring them back.

He's here, and it's really him. [Slightly bitter, but mostly just annoyed:] As opposed to Everyman.

[There's a long silence as he lets this process.]

Bring them back before they died? What if the death wasn't through violent means? Would it 'port someone in without the thing that was going to kill them?

And wasn't Everyman one of Luthor's, a member of his Infinity Inc.?
