Good afternoon, City.
In the past few days, my integrity has been called into question in the frankest and most uncertain terms. Your faith in me and my ability to act as Mayor has been disappointed. And I find that I must apologize.
Yes, the rumors are true. Yes, I am fully culpable for my actions. Yes, I have let you down, each and every one of you. Five years ago, you, the people of this city, entrusted me great power--and I have abused it. More than that, I have lied to my wife, Gail, and the family I built together. To every citizen, whether native-born, immigrant, or Import, I give my deepest and most sincere apologies. I only can hope and pray that you can--not forgive me, not understand me, but rebuild on the foundation of the mistakes I have made.
For that reason, I will be officially resigning as Mayor, a decision that will be effective as of Monday the 11th. My second in command, Mr. Byrne, will be acting Mayor in the interim until November's election determines my successor. Please, give him your support and keep him in your thoughts. We are embarking on a new journey... one which must be taken without me at the helm. But I have great faith in this city--have always had faith in this city and its people--and I know that you will make better decisions than I.
